Pruning Cucumbers
This is my first year doing cucumbers. Do they need to pruned to one stem like tomatoes or just let them go wild?

Re: Pruning Cucumbers
I just let mine go, they are on a trelis, and the attach themselves most of the time.

pruning cucumbers-see video
I plan to do this this year. I put 2 seeds per square, four squares, and the vines over took my trellis, and later fell down. I did get lots of cukes, but some got "lost" under all the leaves. My community garden neighbors who grew them on the ground didn't harvest any, or very few.

Re: Pruning Cucumbers
Excellent video. Thanks!
I have seen women looking at jewelry ads with a misty eye and one hand resting on the heart, and I only know what they're feeling because that's how I read the seed catalogs in January - Barbara Kingsolver - Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

Re: Pruning Cucumbers
I feel as if I could prune cucumbers easily and identify the growing tip without pulling off all the baby cucs. Of course I would have to have successful cucumber plants to even consider pruning. The cool Coastal PNW climate just does not like those warm weather plants. (maybe that should be the warm weather plants don't like the cool Coastal PNW climate)
That was a great video.

Re: Pruning Cucumbers
Thanks for the video. I can see I'm going to have to plant a couple of cukes in pots this year so I can take them inside when there are cool nights. Maybe I can get earlier cukes this way. Thanks again.

Re: Pruning Cucumbers
Long before SFG, I alway planted my cukes along the fence to save space. But I never thought to prune then. I will have to try this.

Re: Pruning Cucumbers
Great question killjug, and I wouldn't have even known to ask it. Looks like they are very easy to prune to one stem. Yay! I'm going to try it this year! ![Very Happy](https://2img.net/i/fa/i/smiles/icon_biggrin.png)

Re: Pruning Cucumbers
Last summer on a 4ft. wide trellis I had one tomato plant, one or 2 cuke plants, and 3 green beans. All three were repeatedly pruned. In the end the cucumbers produced the least. Green beans produced the most, acting like an invasive beast.

Re: Pruning Cucumbers
I had little luck with cukes last year. I have a sunnier spot picked out for this year.

Re: Pruning Cucumbers
After watching the video now I know why my cukes didn't produce as expected. The difference is pruning correctly, your video was great thank you. This year should be much better!
