Help! What's Sprouting?
I am in zone 6 and because of the heavy spring rains, was only able to sow seeds outdoors on May 5. I am a novice at this and frankly I can't tell whether I am looking at veggies germinating or weeds! A lot of it looks like grass to me. Here are some photos:
Spinach??

Looks like the same thing growing in my beets squares and carrots:

Carrot (Parisienne)?

Some things are sprouting that look legit:
Collards?

Lettuce?

Beets?

But I'm afraid that i have a bunch of weedy seeds sprouting.
I do have some transplants that went in on May 1 that are looking ok though!
Strawberries with questionable "Spinach" in the center:

Onions with questionable "Carrots" in the center:

Sweet Peppers

Any help from an experienced eye would be appreciated!

Re: Help! What's Sprouting?
If you are planting in fresh Mel's Mix you will have very very few weed seeds in there. I would suggest just wait it out a while longer. In a week you will be able to tell what you are seeing. Confidence is high, you will have more vegetable growing than weeds.

Re: Help! What's Sprouting?
I hope so! I just have more of this stuff than other things germinating, so I am getting nervous.
Plus the compost that I used from an organic garden center did have some topsoil added, but I'll be patient and keep my fingers crossed! Thanks, camprn!
Btw, excuse the messy grids! I had used tape as a temporary grid until I get my drip irrigation installed, and I took the photos above after a heavy rain this afternoon, which made the tape a ragged mess!

Re: Help! What's Sprouting?
It is all good!!!
It is worth waiting for a few reasons. As the seedlings get bigger you will look at them over and over and you will get to know them. Then, you will get to know the plants they become. If some of it turns out to be grass, you will get to know those too but it will be easy to lift those out of the mix as the mix is loose/friable. This could also be an exercise in patience, something that comes in handy whilst gardening.

LOL, all of the above was a suggestion.... oh there is GOBS AND GOBS of HOPE!!! You are already growing vegetables! it's just hard to tell which ones are the vegetables, tee hee!MasonGarden wrote:I also just saw a thread on "Seedling Pictures" where some of them look familiar, so there's hope!

Re: Help! What's Sprouting?
I think it is all good but it will be a lot easier to tell for sure once they get their "true" leaves, the second set. Many different seedlings' first set of leaves look the same like grass. Fear not I think they are vegies not weeds.

I agree they all look like the real deal except the very last pic you posted which you did not name and are still too small for identification otherwise all looks fine.

Thanks all for the encouragement! Yes, Miss M the last picture was a repost of the "spinach" pic. Time will tell. I'm looking forward to seeing what the second set of leaves brings!
