Hello everyone!

I am very pleased to have found this site! I live in south Florida. I bought Mel's book and am working on figuring out how to budget my funds and get my first square foot garden started.

I have some heirloom seeds I purchased about 2 years ago and have kept in my refrigerator in a plastic lock n lock container. It's inside a black plastic bag and has not seen "the light of day". I am wondering if the seeds would still grow after 2 years in the fridge. Any input on this question would be welcome. Also, any suggestions as to the low-cost way of buying/building the frame for my garden.

Try putting some seeds on a wet napkin/paper towel in a ziploc baggie and check on it every few days. You should soon see if they are viable or not.

Hello in Florida and greetings.

Free is good for frames. cinder blocks, rocks, logs, coffee cans full of sand, bags of cement that have absorbed moisture, sand bags...

A thought: there are 'cloth bags' for growing potatoes. How about a box bag?

Use 4 foot wide weedcloth. Cut 2 six foot lengths. Lay one on top of the other at 90*. That gives you a double layer that is 4x4, with 1 foot sides all around to flip up as the box sides.

You have to help me here! I don't know the best way to secure the corners. I guess they could be sewn, or clamped, or ???

I've never seen one either! Do you think it would work?

Most seeds are viable for 3-5 years. A few, like parsnips, you need to renew with fresh seed each year.

There is a list somewhere and if I can find it I'll post it.
I know I've got it on my blog somewhere in either Feb or March, but will try to find the direct URL on the net for you.

Sorry, I can't find the site for the Seed Viability Chart itself.
I copied it to my blog on Jan 30th but from where, I don't remember.

Middlemamma......I hope this info is OK to post like this on this forum but I can't find it anywhere else and its something the newbie would like to know.

If it's not OK, just remove it. I'll understand.
