Hello from Sunland California
Hi to everyone I have ripped all the sod from my backyard and have installed 8 boxes ( 3/ 3ftx6ft and 5/ 4ftx6ft) and searching for the stuff to make mels mix. I have found the compost for free but still searching for the vermiculite. If I did the math right I will need 29 cubic feet of each ingredient. my goal is to learn and grow my own food and to learn how to do canning.

Hi, model a man, welcome to the forum and to SFG!
Wow, you are starting big, I am impressed! There are lots of very experienced people here on the forum who will be glad to help you with any questions you may have. Have you read Mel's book yet?
Don't forget that peat moss is compressed in its bags and will fluff up... some people have accidentally used too much peat, that way.
I grew up on a small farm, but last year was my first SFG experience and wow, I had a lot of fun with it. The planning and construction phases were so exciting to me. I also taught myself how to can, with lots of help and advice from some of the expert canners here on the forum. If I can do it, you can do it!
Again, welcome, and happy gardening!
Megan

Re: Hello from Sunland California
Model A Man, you certainly are ambitious.
Your calculations are correct for the beds you have listed, but you might want to consider preparing an extra cubic foot or two for each box as once you water the Mels's Mix in, the level goes down a bit.
Please check out the Vermiculite Data Base. It was created using information provided by our members. It may assist you in finding a local source for your vermiculite.
