SFG in Southern California
I filled all my boxes over the last two seasons. Built the boxes with my dad, which was great! Bought mix each month till I filled them all. I have 1 - 4x4 2 - 4x6 1 - 4 x 10 and 1 - 2 x 10
This year I am enjoying the garden much more and having fun with the whole thing.
Early Spring lettuce box:

Now (4 x 4):

Herbs area:

Potato section 4 x 6:

Tomato box 2 x 10:

Added barrels for berries and one grape plant this year:

Here's an overall view of the garden area. The lettuce box is not seen, but to the left past the barrel.

I'm also feeling really pleased because this is the first year my yard is on the local bees mapping service. Last year I had to pollenate. This year I have not even had to begin that process because everything is being pollenated. First year ever for my fruit trees too. Makes a big difference.

I've begun collecting dumped cement chunks around the desert to create definite paths. I also have a friend that will be letting me use up some red brick she no longer wants to create part of the paths. Near some of the boxes, I believe I can grow some thyme between the paths for an added interest. Plans down the road. Still trying to figure out how I want to line the paths or just leave them dirt. I do believe putting something down will assist with retention of moisture. So this is it so far.

HDMama, Your garden is a nice testimony for gardening in the desert climates.

Re: SFG in Southern California
I love the idea of the junk concrete chunks re-purposed for the garden! Clean up the desert AND frugally build/beautify your yard/garden. I may have to make some room in my yard for that. Stuff like that is pretty easy to come by around here. I just have to get a bit more creative!

+1!
While I like green, grass is overrated. I'd MUCH prefer what you've got!

Your garden area looks great! Did you plant your summer vegetables already?
