How many peas or beans in a square foot?
I want to plant my peas and beans in the back row of my raised beds. They will be planted in the 4 foot back row of my 3 beds. Am I correct that I can plant 8 in each sqaure foot? It seems like a lot seen as how they need to climb the trellis. All I can see is a tangled mess. Pardon my silly question, I'm a newbie.

I planted 8 peas per square just last night! And I'll be doing 8-9 beans per square in a few weeks. Go for it - if they need to be thinned, we can do that later.
Best wishes!

Re: How many peas or beans in a square foot?
I didn't plant but one square of peas that where "eh", but I did plat two squares of pole beans (8 each) that was affectionately called the "bean jungle"

This was just in july, so they kept growing... and growing.. and invading... they somehow found their way over to the next SFbox! But it was fun and one of the only trule successful things in the garden, but this year I will besure to have a stronger slimbing system. I just used several bamboo stakes, I'll beed steel post if they are like they were last year!

Re: How many peas or beans in a square foot?
Last year I tried growing peas in the old fashioned row system and they did not do very well. I am getting ready to grow sugar snap peas in the square foot garden. I was reading the old SFG book and Mel says to soak them in a legume innoculant powder. Should I do this? I have also read somewhere about soaking the peas before you plant them.
Thanks,
Marc
