hello zone 10. you may have a hard time finding someone in your zone, since it is statistically small. if you have a question, just ask. I live in southeast Texas around Houston. So, I assume that your zone includes the keys. Our family produces beef for a living, and we have some thick marshes in our zone. So, I might be able to relate with some of your questions. Again, if you have any questions just ask, and someone might be able to answer.

Acara, as you just met, is on the north side of Tampa, another member near Sebring, and another in the Gainesville area. (I'm sorry, members, I can't remember who!)...so not anybody right next door, but close enough to commiserate. (I'm a Tampa girl, too...transplanted, and really hating the snow and slush right now.)

I am in zone 9. We usually get at least some frost - and we did and I think it is probably over for the season. Our summers are not as hot and certainly not as humid, but as a zone it is close - esp for veggies which have less variance than ornamentals.

I'm in zone 10. I just planted a roma tomato and different lettuces.

Also getting ready to plant a Valencia orange tree in the back yard. I hear it's a good time for that. It's not so hot and the rain will help the tree as opposed to planting this tree during the summer months.

I'm in Zone 10 in Southern California, Sunset Zone 22, according to my calculations.

I've had terrible luck with corn and cucumbers in recent years, although beans and tomatoes do well during the summer. My fall-planted lettuces and Asian greens always prosper, and the broccoli is thriving so far.

There are a few crops, including potatoes, that require soil that has not been amended with manure for at least six months.

I wish I could offer more specific advice, as Florida has been both warmer and colder than my climate during the last few years.

Remember, gardening is a constant experiment. If one crop doesn't succeed, try another, than try again.

Hey Acara, have you had any luck with Vanilla orchids?

I re-potted mine in Mel's mix and it did ok. The second time I repotted them though, it did very poorly. Any advice?

I'm not in zone 10, but I found this site on hot climate tomatos and companion planting that you might find of interest. I sent a package to a friend who is trying to start a garden the the Philippines.

Hello, Yes, I'm in Naples. I'm totally new to SFG, but excited and determined. At the moment, I'm trying to 'encourage' Lowes to carry both Mel's Mix and 4 cubic foot bags of Vermiculite - touch wood, it'll work... Smile Anyway, good to know of someone else down here! Smile

glad you\'re here Marcus,

Glad to have another new SFG convert. You will find a friendly group here, willing to give advice or let you know about their experiences.

Please take the time to go thru some of our older threads to find helpful information. We have a vermiculite data base where you can locate sources in case Lowes doesn't pan out. Lots of information about composting, SFG box building, seed starting, even Table Top Gardens.

Enjoy your visits with us. And YES, we I love you pictures.

I'm new here, and new to gardening - I'm in zone 10 , I think, I'm not sure! I'm in Alicante in Spain and found a zone map for Europe and I just hope it's true. thinking No Frosts, ever! lowest temperature at night around 5ºC (40ºF)in January, and highest day temperature around 35ºC (95ºF) in July and August. Very different to gardening in Britain! Any help from any of you more experienced zone 10ers is much appreciated!

glad you\'re here Elaine!

I *used* to live in zone 10 (Miami, Florida) but have been freezing my artichokes off up here in Northern New Hampshire (zone 4) for almost 12 years.

Check in the regional forums, I'm sure there's plenty of people who can chime in & help with your questions.

Now that makes sense. I do plant potatoes in one of my slightly unfinished piles, making sure they have cooled.

Post  Nymiko 11/16/2012, 12:46 pm

I'm also in zone 10 ,Palm beach FL

I know this isn't a question about SFG but does anyone happen to know anything about growing gardenias in zone 10? I transplanted them about 2 months ago and now all the older leave around the bottom is yellowing. Mad I tried doing some research online and maybe it's a iron deficiency so I fertilized it yesterday and added some Mel's mix around it a couple of days ago since I only planted it in native/ topsoil. The sprinkler system has a valve right next to the plants so I was also suspecting root rot. * sigh. I have no idea what I'm doing and I'm just watching them get more yellow everyday. pale

Nymiko,

I moved from Zone 10 in Southern California in late June; the climate there is quite different from that of Florida.

Do you have pictures of your afflicted plants? The causes could be many.

Overwatering or the wrong PH are the usual causes of yellow leaves on gardenias. Get a ph test and see if your soil is too alkaline. Gardenias prefer a slightly acid soil.

I'm also in Zone 10; Miami (Palmetto Bay to be exact).  Been trying to grow a few things for a few years now.  Did pretty well last year with some notable exceptions.

Trying SFG this year and am excited about the coming season.  Will be completing my beds over the next few weeks.  Managed to find some vermiculite thanks to the database here so I have what I need, just need to get it all together.

Is anyone in zone 10?!?! Empty Yeah!! Zone 10-ers!

Post  SharonBreay 12/11/2013, 12:51 pm

Hi all! I've moved from the mountains of CO (zone 4 & arid), where I was just being introduced to Square Foot Gardening & eager to start, moved to zone 10a (near, but not quite 10b) in Punta Gorda, FL--about 1 hr. south of Sarasota & 1 hr. north of Naples. Just put up a raised Veg-Trug this week-end, a small 6' x 2.5' raised "V" shaped garden, that I'm still planning on using as a Square Foot Garden. A question I have is, should I use so much Vermiculite down here? Mel is from Utah, but it's MIGHTY wet down here in the summer. I had some mold this summer on the top of the soil with Caladiums, and sure don't want this in my little vegetable garden. I've vegetable gardened for years, but not using square foot method, and not in such a humid climate.
