Re: About how many square feet of SFG space do you have?
I have 68 square feet (Four 4X4's and four 1X1's).
Hubby has 2 more 4x4's and two 3x3's in progress for spring. So I should have 118 sq ft come spring. Plus we will have some corn rows set up like boffer, a small pumpkin patch and about 15 containers. 2nd year here I come! Just gimme some sun and get outta my way!

I have one 4x8 right now. I am adding 3 more in the spring. Plus a potato box. I also have a strawberry patch and a rhubarb patch.
Oh and I'm adding 6 hens this spring, too!! I'm really excited about that!

Re: About how many square feet of SFG space do you have?
This is my first year of SFG and I have:
(2) 4x4
(1) 3x8
for a total of 56 ft^2. I wanted to start off small and see how it went. It went really well (not amazing) so I plan on maybe doubling that next year but how and where to put them is the question. I don't have a long range plan for the garden yet so I don't want to put them someplace I'll regret...

last year, which was my first, I believe I had 80 - 4 4X4's and 2 4X2's. This year I moved up to - ahem - 166. And I almost definitely will do more next year!
Megan, I am so glad you have a back yard!

Is it a pick-up? You could use the bed as a raised SFG if it is!

Re: About how many square feet of SFG space do you have?
I have a 4x7 and a 3x6, so 46 SF total... but I've got the materials for another 3x6 and a 2x8 cold-frame so that will bring me to 63 SF by spring.

I have (3) 4' x 24' beds. So that's 288 squares. Thinking of adding another for grapes and blueberries.

Re: About how many square feet of SFG space do you have?
We started this year with
6-4x4 =96
1-4x10=40
8-4x12=384
2-2x12=48
Total 568
Next year in balance of garden space
6- 4x12=288
New garden space
16 - 4x12=768
Next year total 1624
Green Hose plans = 20 x 48 green house with 2- 4x 40=320
and 2-2x40=160
Total greenhouse = 480
Combined total 2104 if my math is right ,,give or take a little
If the greenhouse tomato yield of 30-40 lbs of veggie per plant and one plant per sqaure foot = on the low side 25 lbs per sq 2100 sq x 25= 52500 lbs of tomato's x 2 crops cross fingers = 105,000 lbs at say 90 cents per lb = $94,500.00 now thats in a perfect world but then again isnt SFG as close to perfect as it gets?????
I used tomato's because I have been reading carolyn's tomato produce post but I will plant numerous differnt veggies, we also have 32 pomegranates, 150 blackberries, 50 blueberries, 2 figs, 2 peach, 1 lemon, 20 muscedines, and over 100 chickens, 5 dogs 8 cats, and all the kids are grown and gone,,,, I should have started sfg farming 10 years ago !!

Wow, Jay, that is amazing!
I'd like to hear more about your pomegranates. Are they a southern crop? How big do they get?

Total feet
Our garden space is 32' x 35' feet with two 3' gates in the center of the long sides. After our first year of turning our row garden into SFG we have these SFG boxes filled with MM:
1 4x4 = 16'
5 1x8=40'
Total: 56'
In addition we also made raised beds planted in grids, sort of like Mel's old style mixing peat or rice hulls and compost into our existing soil, totaling:
3 4x10= 120'
1 4x6=24'
Total: 144'
Our total garden footage this spring was 200 feet.
For fall planting we turned the rest of our row-style garden into more Mel's old-style beds:
4 4x10 =160'
1 2x32 = 64'
Total: 224'
That last 2x32' bed is against the fence and is for gooseberries and blueberries. We are making a mirror bed just over the fence from that for next spring's strawberries. We plan to make beds all around the remaining outer four sides of the garden fence for flowers and shrubs.
We still have space around the inside garden fence. We plan to build at least one or two more 1x8' boxes and put the rest of the fence area into beds mixing rice hulls, compost, and our soil. The remainder of those beds will be for permanent residents - a corner for a dill bed, Egyptian walking onions on one side, raspberries on another, we might move the asparagus bed inside the garden - we aren't yet decided for certain about the remainder.
As of this writing our total amount of beds and boxes that have already been planted or soon will be comes to 424 feet.

Re: About how many square feet of SFG space do you have?
I have only 16 square feet. It would appear my SFG is the smallest of all. I like to think though that, what I lack in square footage, I more than make compensate with my vast knowledge of gardening and SFG know how in particular. You see, I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. Just kidding, of course.

Are you going to make more boxes next spring? When I first started SFG'ing I had just one 4' x 4' box...now I have 10 of various sizes! I am thinking of changing one of my 2' x 8's to a 3' x 8'. I just love trying new stuff and the 8 extra squares would be nice to have.

Re: About how many square feet of SFG space do you have?
This year all I had was a 3x4 = 12 square feet... So yours isn't the smallest after all erbarnett.
I also had a few pots and other various containers scattered around, as well as 4 Topsy Turvy's, but I'm not counting those for this purpose.
Next year, I will have another 3x4 and three 4x4's to add for a total of 72 square feet if my math is correct. I plan on growing about 5 or 6 different varieties of heirloom tomatoes next year. So, I should have plenty of space!

RE: How many square feet?
Hi all!
I have 1 4x4, we're building a 2x8 now and DH is working on a 2x4 cold frame. Our yard has so much shade, I'm thinking of taking down a tree and some of the shrubs. My bees really love the shrubs though, we'll see. The planning is ALMOST the best part.

Re: About how many square feet of SFG space do you have?
DH is on the verge of banning me from the internet....everytime I spend time on here I am throwing more "expansion" ideas at him!
But this thread makes me glad I am not the only one who thinks BIGGER is BETTER.
