The Bird is Back!

Hello fellow SFG'ers, Well I have been rather preoccupied of late and not much time for forum posting and commenting. So here is a short update of Jay Birds Garden. The last 45 days of over 100 degrees has taken its toll but compared to the rest of the county gardeners that have shredded their gardens I feel like a master gardener.
We have watered daily and the typical hot weather plants have thrived the Okra, jalapeno's ceyenne, bell's are doing wonderfully. The tomatoes have started growing new suckers from the base of the plants as well as a second spurt from the top with plenty of blooms , so no need to plant fall tomoto's, the cucumbers looked to be about gone but in the last few days have begun to add new growth, we did however dig up and replant 12 sqaures any way. the purple hulls are (3rd planting) beginning to bloom , Canteloupe's are iffy at the moment I am hoping the cool nights forecasted will help them out.

In a nut shell SFG is the only way I will ever garden again and plan on at least 20 more 4 x 12's next year.

I'm glad to hear SFG is working out so well for you. Are you getting by with a good mix of 5 composts as Mel prescribes, or have you needed to supplement some of your boxes with fertilizer?

How are your plans coming to move back east to start a new business?

Tim has had some Real Life lemons to deal with and has been scarce. He checks in once in a while-shoot him a PM. :dancingpepper:

Moving is on hold , checking into purchasing 13 acres next to me and gonna go for it right here in texas,

I use chicken litter as my compost (exclusively) and after plants sprout top dress with rabbit manure,

No additional fertilizer required and NO chemicals , soap or anything else for bug control, Chickens get free range around the garden and the guineas will fly over the fence reguarly to eat the bugs, we do have to hand remove the tomato horn woms but otherwise pests are not a issue, I dont even have any skeeters anymore,, just love my birds!

Glad you're back, Jay Bird. Your garden sounds like mine - okra, tomatoes, jalapenos, and sweet potatoes are all that survived the heat and humidity. We hope fall is kinder to us.

You make me miss my chickens. Maybe someday I'll again be blessed with the pitter patter of little droppings.

You did so well !!! such success!! I love the part that the tomatoes gave you new plants to start for fall. Mine have done the same, I have a few tomato plants that will keep on tickin:) I had so much more success with SFG as well. To think I will have plants into the spring possibly, with the greens and such. I watched the neighbors collards and mustards survive the snow~~ amazing. So we will see, our hens would love those greens as well.
