Hello from Idaho
Hi everyone, I live near Boise, Idaho, and I just joined after reading Mel's original square foot gardening book. I have ordered the new one. We have two boxes built that are 3x8 and 2 and 1/2 by 8, 22 inches high, so not really traditional but they should work. Hoping to get everything in place for a fall crop. Glad to be here!

Welcome to the forum from Ohio! Good to have you join us. You will find a wealth of helpful information from the equally helpful members here. Good to see that you have already ordered the all new SFG book, with all of its great updates.

Hello from Idaho
As you're about to discover, the SFG method has been improved, streamlined, and simplified since the first edition.
Please be aware that only 6" of Mel's Mix is required for most crops. For deeper beds, fill the bottom with sand or topsoil.
Feel free to ask any questions as they come up, either here or at www.squarefootgardening.org.

Re: Hello from Idaho
Thank you! I was wondering if it was 6 or 12 so I will plan accordingly. It should help save money on getting everything I need.

If you plan to grow such crops as indeterminate potatoes, leeks, parsnips, or long carrots, consider purchasing or making some "top hats."

Re: Hello from Idaho
Welcome, Seneca Sky! Glad you found the forum! You will learn so much, but also utilize the SEARCH bar in upper left hand corner of this page. Most things have been experienced by someone! Keep notes, every year is different.
Also, grow things you like to eat. Herbs are expensive to buy, so I do grow those too!
