Where is North on this bed? Where in the USA are you located, that covers a very large area. Could you update your profile to show your state or geographic area?

Re: Garden Chart for corn beans radish and beets.
top is north bottom is south
left is west right east.
bed length 20ft x 4ft
the plan shows 180 beets, 180 beans, 48 sweetcorn, 64 black radish
24 red radish and 2 squash!
the corn, beet and bean beds are plant 2 weeks apart left to right
according to succession rules.
zone 7A maryland
frost dates 50% april 5 100% frost free may 16
as for this is top terraced bed on 15 degree hill
it is bed one in my garden
as for the plant timing I left it
up to the person who uses it.
any other questions

Re: Garden Chart for corn beans radish and beets.
The reason I asked about the direction of the bed was a concern about shading of smaller plants by the corn. The 2nd and 4th sections will be heavily shaded as the sun moves from the east to the west. I plant the tall plants along the north edge of the bed to prevent them from shading other plants.

Interesting play on the three sisters growing method with using beets instead of squash. I wonder if they will provide similar benefits as the squash did for the native Americans that used the three sisters method of growing. I am super curious how this does, and I hope the orientation doesn't mess with it too much. Really cool design!
I've thought about trying a three sisters method but wasn't sure how to fit in the squash with SFG since they need so much room. Please update us on how they did once you are later in the season, and good luck!

If you have a diagram for it, please do post it. I would love to see what you have. Sounds like something I might give a try in the future.

T0beus
i have several diagrams for it
depending on what type corn, squash and beans grown.
some for lima beans and midseason corn
bush string beans and corn
pole trained zucchini
climbing beans squash a fence late corn.
i played around with various combinations
on paper during covid.
i have varied set templates so I am do allsorts
square foot gardening templates in various sizes 4ft width and 4ft-20 ft long
beds. i have over 50 different bed diagrams but not all three sisters.
and I can make you a custom bed diagram if you like in
square foot spacing if tell me what vegetables you want in the bed.

Re: Garden Chart for corn beans radish and beets.
The original 3 sisters was with vining winter squashes, not bush summer squashes. All were dried for winter storage.
There are a lot of 3 sister setups that can be Googled.

sanderson the original three sisters does not work
well in the square foot system without
make several strict compromises. so my version
which is designed for fresh vegetable harvesting
fits square foot system better.

tl;dr: Corn, vine string beans, and bush cucumbers.
I have what I need for my primary bed, but I would like to play around with some ideas for planting corn in a 4' x 8' bed. I had hoped to incorporate sunflowers (primarily to divert pests from desirable crops) and cucumbers. Was thinking of playing with 3 sisters using string beans and bush cucumbers if possible, maybe taking 2 squares for the cucumbers each and using 4 squares in the middle for the beans/corn. Maybe use the corners for the sunflowers? I don't know yet, so anything you have that might work with these crops would be awesome since I haven't built/oriented the 4'x8' bed yet.

Not sure I understand using bush cucumbers or bush squash for 3-sisters plantings. The concept of the 3-sisters was to have the vines of the squash (or cucumbers) climbing the corn, adding vertical gardening to conserve space. Why use bush varieties instead of climbing?

The way I understood it was the squash provided the ground cover and kept animals away from the other two, which were corn and vine beans. The vine beans would cling to the corn and grow up it. But either way, I don't need 4k lbs of cucumbers, and bush varieties of cucumbers should provide plenty for us. I just wanted something to fill in for the squash that works well with corn and beans since I'm the only one in my family that likes squash and I already have 2 of those plants.

I think you meant the beans climbing the corn stalks and the vining winter squash covering the dirt.OhioGardener wrote:Not sure I understand using bush cucumbers or bush squash for 3-sisters plantings. Re: Garden Chart for corn beans radish and beets.
I'm locking this thread. Everyone can Google 3 Sisters and come up with their own version. In fact, maybe it's best out of the beds.
