Lavender Farming for $$
I have been thinking about various ways to make all this land pay for itself. Yesterday, I watched a DIY show -- "We Bought The Farm," about a couple who wanted to start a business growing lavender and making their own cosmetics, etc.
At the end of the episode, they showed the finished acreage, with all the lavender plants in, and put up a box with the info about it. 1 acre of lavender can generate $34,000 a year in revenue. That's way more than I thought.
I know it would be a lot of work and money to get established, but compared to growing veggies to sell at a farmers' market, I think it would be a lot less labor-intensive, and lavender seems to like it here. Whadayathink?

I would check out some other Lavender growers to see how they are doing. Find out how many years it takes to become profitable. Determine who your potential customers would be. Calculate your Return On Investment. Put together a business plan. Then if you have the energy and finances then go for it!!!

Re: Lavender Farming for $$
My eye has picked up a fair amount of jade in the niche farming for profit realm. While clearly it is possible, JIMHO, really glosses over the business arrangements, hustle and very job-job aspects of hours and work.
$34K from a acre of lavender seems reasonable, i suspect the bulk of it comes from the regular selling of bouquets or artisan products (soaps etc) at a farmers market. As referenced on google $6 farmers market bouquet makes the acre add up, if you do the math though, that quickly saddles back to 100+ bouquets a week.

Re: Lavender Farming for $$
WOW! Awesome response. Lots to look at. All!
What I'm looking for is passive income (I'm too old to actually work. ) So, I'm thinking wholesale only. If that $34,000 is revenue, not profit, that cuts it at least in half. Then, if it's retail, not wholesale, that cuts it at least in half again. Then, if I have to hire the work done, that eats into it even more. So, if I can make $6k a year for sitting in my rocking chair, watching lavener grow, I'm happy with that.
Also, I'm happy to start small and see how it goes. 1/2 acre to begin with would suit me just fine. Even an extra $3k a year would be nice.

I'm picturing Suz going into a "specialty" gardening shop and looking for cloning materials. "It's for lavender." "Sure, lady, what ever you say."
Peace, lady

Suz, there's a lavender farm here in N GA that (I think) grows 23 different types. I've been wanting to go up & check out their farm... Especially in bloom!! Maybe they can offer you some advice...

Ooo, here's your excuse to go check 'em out. You're doing research for a friend in California. Don't forget your camera.

Absolutely! The more I look into this, the more I like it. Katie can use her mobile as a "commercial kitchen" and make pet products to sell at her events. And the deer don't like lavender, so we won't have to fence the fields. The best part is that we can start small, so if it doesn't work out, it won't cost much.
Re: Lavender Farming for $$
I officially started my lavender biz, today. (All I did was buy 3 plants from the local college plant sale and keep the receipt for tax purposes, but it's a start. )
This is an unknown variety my kids gave me last year for Mother's Day.
English Lavender
This one's Grosso
Here is Munstead
Now it's time to do my homework and find out what I have and what to do with them.

Re: Lavender Farming for $$
Watched a couple of Youtube videos, so now I'm an expert on propagating lavender from cuttings.
Always take cuttings in the fall, uh, I mean spring.
Take 1" cuttings from the tip, uh, I mean 2-3" cuttings from the base.
Always use rooting hormone, uh, I mean never mind, it isn't necessary.
There ya go. Now you're experts, too.

Lol!

Actually, you should take 5"-6" cuttings, cut off the tips, and dip the bottoms in honey.

Yup, that's the one thing they all agree on -- it's easy!
Re: Lavender Farming for $$
Katie has a big, beautiful lavender plant that's starting to bloom already. I think we may be ready for our first harvest and I've already zeroed in on our first product -- lavender infused oil.

Re: Lavender Farming for $$
Thanks, Marie -- great article -- but we had to abandon this project when Hubby's health started failing. I am now stuck with about 20 lavender plants I don't know what to do with but still have to water every day.AtlantaMarie wrote:Hey, Suz & Sanderson!
