Compost source
I'm relocating and expanding my garden this year and have been on the lookout for my 5 sources of compost. I found a deal that was too good to keep to myself. My local Wal Mart has 1 cubic foot bags of Nature's Care Really Good Compost (that is the real name!) for $1 a bag. It's by the makers of Miracle Grow, which makes me a little nervous, but on the bag it says "One man's trash is another garden's treasure - thoughtfully selected and aged for your garden's organic matter enrichment. On the back of the bag it says that it is formulated from one or more of the following: forest products compost, yard waste compost, manure compost, mushroom compost, food waste compost.
My garden's not built yet, so I haven't opened any of the bags I bought yet, but I did peek inside a broken bag at the store. It looks really nice and dark, not too sandy or with big chunks. Obviously I've only seen a small bit of a broken bag, but I'm pretty pleased with my find and wanted to share in case you are on the lookout for compost!

Re: Compost source
I make my own compost, but if I had to buy 5 different types of compost, it would be hard to find (in my area). The label doesn't indicate peat moss so you may not have to reduce the volume of peat moss to add. Check for non-composted wood chips and consider screening them out, especially the larger pieces. Wood will tie up the nitrogen. Maybe add a bag of composted manure per 4 bags of Nature's Care Really Good compost. Ecoscraps Compost is a veggie based compost. Whole Foods also sells a veggie based compost. Now you have 3 sources.
Re: Compost source
I just checked out MG's website.
The fine print states that in Maryland and Illinois, the product contains the ingredients you listed. Nothing is said about other states.
Also, it indicates that the compost may contain ONE OR MORE of the following, so it's possible that it could consist of only one or two ingredients. It might be a good idea to e-mail or call the company to inquire further.

Good idea, Donna, to call the company to see what is delivered to the PNW!donnainzone5 wrote:I just checked out MG's website.

Re: Compost source
If it only contains "One or more" of the following", it's most likely the first two.. "forest products compost, yard waste compost"."On the back of the bag it says that it is formulated from one or more of the following: forest products compost, yard waste compost, manure compost, mushroom compost, food waste compost."
I sure wish our law makers would crack down on the "Truth in advertising" laws. Have you ever noticed how everything is "FREE" in most of the ads on TV and radio? Call today for your "FREE" 30 day supply.. yea RIGHT.
There's laws against providing false and misleading information in order to sell a product or service. No ones listening.

Re: Compost source
I recently watched a compost maker go through their composting process..It looked good. It was on How it's Made on TV. You may be able to view it on their website
This may be it, I don't have time tonight to go through it

Re: Compost source
These are advertising word games - "Formulated to contain one or more" is a lame way of saying your guess is as good as ours.
I would seek out five ingredients that I control. Then use this non descript what the heck is it stuff to bulk up the volume.

Hi Mikeju990. Welcome from Atlanta, GA! Glad you're here.
Can you tell us a bit about your garden? What do you like to grow? How much space do you have?
