OMG:Another compost source...

I routinely pass through a tiny village (poplation 1,100) in order to go to town. The tiny village decorates the main st. lamp posts with Halloween pumpkins and corn stalks, nobody steals or defaces. (wow says this ol new york gal) Anyway it's all coming down today to make way for Christmas decorations....guess who opened her big mouth and is loading up the stuff for the compost heaps?? and more pumpkin pulp for my worm bins.... I am so totally out of control with composting...

I'm another composting fanatic. Every nice day I'm out there carting leaves from the woods to put in my new beds and over the old ones. I pull soggy bark from rotting trees. Tear up moss and black soil from around rocks. Make daily trips to the coffee shop with my 5 gallon bucket for grinds. And hopefully this week I'll get to the beach for seaweed.

we did it....we ( hubby, 6 year old, 12 year old and my self) went over and raked up our neighbors yard that was full of leaves
she thought it was awesome 
.....last year she paid a teenager 20 bucks to rake them 
our daughter went and spent the night at my sisters house and came home with a large lawn bag full of leaves

Thats so cool! You must have a really big compost pile or several ones. I know its gonna take me awhile to fill up both sides of my tumbler composter but the end results will be worth it!

When I get the next 3 put together there will be 6 wooden pallet bins. But at the moment I must get in the garage and make room for my car! And should I admit it's a 2 car garage?

I had a compost pile and I found that the tree roots got the best of it. SO - then I started 3 new 4x8 boxes, and I composted directly in them all summer. They are all mounded up with all my secret ingredients, and then in the spring I hope to be able to spread some of that around to the other boxes, and put MM in the top over the finished (or mostly finished, hopefully) compost.
I'm sold on composting right in the raised bed. And I figure I should probably rotate the beds and give one a rest each year, so that year can be designated as my compost bed...
Why give the soil under the compost pile the best nutrients?
Oh, and I have so put in an order for a shed primarily for my garden and bee/chicken stuff. One of these days when our ship of time and money comes in, that request will be granted.
I'm sold on composting right in the raised bed. And I figure I should probably rotate the beds and give one a rest each year, so that year can be designated as my compost bed...

This is such a good idea! I built an extra box this summer and set it in the area of my old compost pile. I have now reduced my compost pile to an upright barrel and a tumbler. HOWEVER, I always seem to have more than what will fit in there, so think next year I will use the new box, with 'critter cage' sides as the new compost box. Then each year move the cage material to another box and spread the goodness around. Let's see if I can remember this brilliant idea come spring.........

I strongly suspect that composting direct on the bed might not allow you to get high temps needed unless you are going to build up some four foot sides .
High temps will tend to dry out the composting materials & the dryish compost will retain the nutrients released , very little will run into the ground after the inital heat up days , unless you absolutely soak the heap after turning it it over .

That is a consideration. I have about 18" in the beds right now, 6 inches in the box, and then about a foot over it by the time the leaves are covering the whole thing. It's been building there for a few months, and will stay over winter, under the snow. When spring comes, we'll see.
At the very least, it will be a partially composted bed, and then I'll put the vermiculite and peat over that, mixed around.
A grand experiment.

I used my T-post trellis supports and tied some boards on them to make a back board for heaping against. I heaped up 3' or a bit more. So far it is working quite well, but my beds are 8' long so the heap can sorta slope.
I need the beds so this is just a fall/winter strategy. In the spring I will do my usual composting in the squash bed and then grow the squash in it and then move it in the fall to where ever needed.
I like the idea of having a different bed each year dedicated to composting. But each time I add one more bed I seem to need one more bed.......
Hmmm,,,,, this could be done in an adaption of the keyhole garden..... I think QuiltBea was thinking on these lines....
