Hello fellow gardeners
I moved from southern CA back in june of 2015 to Livingston MT and well I moved again to Bozeman MT. I work at the Montana State University and I was able to get staff housing so I got a small 2 bedroom house for me and the wife but more importantly..I GOT ROOM TO GARDEN!!!

saddly not alot of room but room none the less

so my new current plan is to do a small is 4' x 3' cinder block bed probably going 2 brick high for a 16" hiegth and use the holes in the blocks to plant anti-deer flowers and some herbs and ofcourse veggies also going to do some food grade bucket planting.

any tips on growing in 4B-3B south west montana and what is good anti-deer plants. I am sure I will be hitting up the MSU extension soon aswell=) happy gardening and looking foreward to get my hands back in the dirt soon

Hi Eric!

Check out the threads in Western Mountains and High Plains and ask all you can think of!

Anti deer plants to grow in cinder block holes~ are these supposed to then protect the plants just a short easy reach past?  I would do a google and talk to ag extention and at Cashman's nursery.  Deer are not a problem for me, I have a double fenced yard and 2 dogs, so I do not know.

Hi Eric!
I'm in central Pennsylvania. I've got deer - apparently quite a few of them. It's winter so there are footprints in the snow all over the place in the backyard. I have not had deer problems in my garden (yet): I have a fence. It's cheap 7'x100' deer netting (I think it was about $15 when I got it, it may be closer to $20 now) around the outside, but it's only propped up 4 to 6ft high, with mismatched wood and metal stakes that I get when other people throw them away, hammered into the ground just a few inches (with a brick, because I was too lazy to find my mallet.) I think it works because:
 - I've always had a fence around the garden, so the deer don't know that there's anything worth bothering with inside it, so they don't 'challenge' the fence
 - I try to keep tasty plants away from the edges, so the deer can't just lean over the top of my comparatively short fence.
 - my garden doesn't have a good 'landing zone': the deer don't have enough room to clear the fence and easily land on a flat surface because the raised beds and trellises break everything up. Two short fences spaced a few feet apart can accomplish something similar to a single very tall fence -- unless you've got flying reindeer, the deer can't clear both at once (I think they need to be able to see both - bright yarn across the top of the inner one might be needed.)
- there's plenty of other things for the deer to eat where I live, especially during the growing season

I don't have any recommendations for anti-deer plants, but I hope that helps!

Welcome back, Eric.

Seeing as you will only be able to manage one bed, you can go hog-wild and do all sorts of things with it.

You are going to double to height to 16" and I think you can build a removable wire cage to keep critturs out and also to cover when it is hot and when it snows. In the winter you could cover it with 6mil plastic and use it as a crop extender at both ends of your growing season.

It is almost like starting again.

happy hi Eric!
glad you\'re here back!
I hear that Irish Spring soap is a deer deterrent. If so, you could plant whatever you want.
Maybe others with that experience will chime in.
Good luck!
