I'll do a BIG watering today and then the garden is on its own.

I think you will certainly cool off when you reach British Columbia, Mr. & Mrs. TD.
We have had  our share of thunderstorms and rain these past few days.

Today I decided I really must make a start on the lawn by trimming the edges first as that does not take long and it leaves a nice line when I actually mow the grass.  Due to me getting up early and watching the Tour de France, I started late. Too late. I had finished the edge trimming with the rain starting, and by the time I had put that tool away it was pelting down so hard that I got very wet and had to change into dry clothes.  Needless to say, the lawn will have to wait at least another day to dry out as the grass is quite thick.

So I was forced to do some housework. In a way it is quite satisfying; I must do more of it. Very Happy

Thank you for thinking of us, TD, and that you get glorious weather.  Here in the Southern Interior of British Columbia it is a very nice day so far.

Thanks Kelejan.  On the way from the airport to our friends house we stopped for a free Calgary Stampede pancake breakfast. Yum!  It's overcast here and cool. Quite a change from the heat in Ottawa. I think we will get rain later today.

So I've been sharing my gardening adventures with my co-worker Barry since the start, and he's retiring after 37 years tomorrow, so I brought him in a pea pod yesterday and I harvested a couple of 6" zucchinis for him this morning. I hope I did it right, I cut it off about 1/2" inch in...

He was very impressed and happy. Those were my 2 biggest ones, so I have to wait for the others to go.

I remember being in Calgary years ago  at the time of the Stampede, attending a Royal Canadian Legion Convention, and we stopped for that pancake breakfast.  It was so good.

I see on TV that some rain is forecast for you in Alberta. Enjoy your break.

I have never seen my garden so green at this time of year.  I will be interested when our local paper publishes the amount of rain we have had this past month.

Daily, we are getting downpours of rain and here in the Southern Interior we are almost like Vancouver, having to carry a brolly with us .Today it paid off when I took my brolly and visited the Seniors' Centre.  The sun was shining nicely and it felt comfortably warm.  Before I left to catch the bus I had to use it to avoid getting soaked on the way to the bus stop, and also had to use it ten minutes later to walk the rest of the way home.

The pro side is that I have seldom had to water, only newly planted stuff.

Wow, you are very fortunate.  We have been having a drought and it's been a struggle to keep things going.  Had some good rain for short periods this past week which has helped a lot!

Hey guys, can I get your thoughts?

This tomato plant is in a planter without MM, and below is a zucchini which is in MM. Are these plants on the way out? Is that browning due to heat?

Looks like tomato needs some nutrients. Do you have any Espoma fertilizer or some kind of manure you can give it? The zucchini looks fine to me. The older leaves tend to die back and look a little ratty. You can just cut them off. Good for you for being able to grow zucchini in the first place. I can't.

Ditto on feeding the tomato plant. My squash leaves look like that as they age and I just cut off the stems.

SAM I think you are doing great with your first year SFG.  Keep asking the questions and the wonderful people on this forum will provide their wise answers.

On another subject ... Mrs TD and I spent yesterday in Drumheller in the heart of the Canadian Badlands about a 2 hour drive NE from Calgary. Absolutely amazing scenery and the location of many important fossil finds. We went to Horseshoe Canyon and the Hoodoos and I walked across a long wobbly suspension bridge. We also attended the Canadian Badlands Passion Play in an amazing outdoor theatre in the hills of the Badlands. Tomorrow we begin our drive through the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

I can only wonder what my SFG is doing.

Maybe post some photos along the way? "TD's Canadian Road trip" I, for one, didn't realize the Badlands extend that far north.

CC ... We are scheduled to return home on Saturday July 24.

Sanderson ... I'll see what I can do about photos but it's not easy doing it from this smartphone.

Another huge rainstorm here in Calgary.  Our friends' backyard patio is flooded. Many of the intersections on the roads in the area are flooded.
It's a real mess.

TD, I thought about you yesterday when I read that Calgary had a heavy rainstorm.  Did you take your flippers with you?

Canada is such a big place, so I do not expect you to come down visit this time.  I remember when my next door neighbour visited Alberta, and he apologised for not dropping in on me; he was visiting Mount Robson at the time with his family, and he got mixed up  with Robson in B.C. where I lived at the time.  I assured him that Mount Robson was about 700 miles away so there was no chance of him visiting.

It will be interesting how your SFG etc will look when you return home.  Even a couple of days not attending to our gardens makes a big difference, let alone the time you will have been absent.

We are now in Salmon Arm BC.  The drive today through Rogers Pass was amazing.  We stopped to walk a few trails including a giant cedars rain forest and a hemlock/cedar rainforest. Salmon Arm is gorgeous.

British Columbia is certainly different to other parts of Canada, but each province has its own kind of beauty.

I like the big skies of the prairies and I can imagine the discomfort of people moving here and feeling hemmed in by mountains.  I expect by now if I moved to the praireis to live I would miss the mountains here.

In England I lived for the last 16 years in Bedfordshire and the highest point was about 60 feet.  Standing at the top of a monument in Ashridge Park, one could see for miles and miles.
