Bean Help Please!

I have planted Yellow and green beans, and when they sprout everything seems OK, but then no leaves and it appears something is eating them. Here are a couple of pictures. I do have a few sprouts that appear to be doing OK. Help please.

Terry, in the top picture, did something eat the first true leaves completely off? If so, that might be birds or a critter, bunny, etc. The lower plant looks like slugs or sow bug damage maybe.

Does it happen at night? Or can you tell? And you don't see any bugs?

What say others?

I had many stalks that the new leaves never even had a chance to get going and were gone. My beds are table top so not bunny problem. Could it have been temperature? We had a little cold snap after I planted. 50's for high and forties at night for a few days. the plants doing well are on the edge of my table top box. Maybe it was warmer? I would think a bird would eat more than a couple of new shoot leaves. I have replanted all of the bad beans except the ones photographed and am replanting them next. I am in Eastern Nebraska so I have plenty of time for a replant.

The bottom one doesn't look like cold damage to me, although the top one maybe, I am still leaning towards birds (now that I remember you are all on TTs. Might try throwing mesh or a row cover up and see if that is the problem. See what the others have to say!

Here are some better pictures of the ones I just pulled up. Root structure is good. the black on the tops is puzzling.

Have you noticed any pill bugs in your beds? Night time is the best time to check. They LOVE green bean sprouts, and this is just what my seedlings looked like after pill bugs attacked them. If so, get some Sluggo Plus.

I would say pill bugs. All of my beds are Table Tops and the pill bugs find a way. Sluggo Plus sprinkled around the mix, especially along the perimeter.

Thanks everyone! I am leaning towards the Pill Bugs and maybe slugs. Since I used reclaimed lumber, I had a pretty large number of pill bugs on some of my wood. Didn't think I put my boxes together with any really bad wood, but I did and still do have some sub par wood staked nearby that had tons of pill bugs. also I have some landscape timbers around the outside of my garden that have begun rotting and falling apart, another source of the bugs. I will try the sluggo Plus. waiting now on replants to come up. Only had four plants out of about 32 I planted make it. only had about half that come up. We have been a little cold and really wet this spring so cold may have been an issue as well.

I'm having the same issue. I think I'll sprinkle some coffee grounds and see if that does anything. I know slugs don't like it but not sure about pill bugs.

Terry, I would recommend that you sprinkle the Sluggo Plus right now. Don't wait until the seeds spout. Even sprinkle under and within the wood pile. Help knock down the population.

How thick do you spread the Sluggo?

The package says to use 0.5 - 1.0 teaspoon per square yard. I use 1.5 - 2.0 teaspoons of the pellets for an entire 4'x4' bed. A little goes a long way.

I just put some down in my lettuce/cabbage bed last week after we got a lot of rain and the little buggers were going after my lettuce. It wasn't 30 seconds after I sprinkled it down when I saw one of the pill bugs carrying off one of the pellets. Two days later, found many dead ones in the bed.

+1 A little goes a long way. You may have to reapply after rain.
