I'm a Newbie....

Hi,

I'm Patty...
I live in central Ohio, have been retired 3 1/2 years, and just planted my 2nd SFG yesterday. All my space has been planted and today a friend gave me a zuchinni plant! Of course I must plant it- and I read that we need more than just one plant...at least one male and one female in order to get the squash. So at this point I have a few questions...

1) can I use MM in a large pot and 2) can I plant up to 4 plants in the one pot? Oh and does anyone know how deep this pot must be?

Thanks!! I appreciate any and all answers, because I'm a city girl with NO gardening experience. I have read the 2nd edition of SFG, and refer to it continually, but still need lots of advice!

You do not need more than one plant in order to successfully grow Zucchini/Squash. Most traditional squash/Zucchini each have both male and female flowers and all they need is a pollinator (bee, human, etc) in order to pollinate the female squash. There are a few varieties that are parthenocarpic and do not need the male flower to pollinate the female flower (or something like that) but they are not the norm.

But the more plants you have the more likely you will have the right combination of male and female flowers at the same time so it can be helpful to have more than one but not necessary.

Hi Patty, Welcome to the Forum from California! $glad you\'re here$ Most zucchini plants have both male and female flowers, so if you have bees, they will take care of the pollination. The female flowers have a teeny zucchini attached so you can tell them apart. Generally, the male flowers make an early appearance with the females making a later appearance along with more males. Plant only one per pot. The leaves are large and need space to spread out. I tried zucchini in pots 10" wide and deep. They did okay but not worth the space so I don't grow them now. If you can get a 4 gallon bucket and drill holes, that would be a nice volume for the roots.

Watch those zukes! Had one hiding under leaves that grew to about 2 lbs a couple of years ago... And only one bush...

One year we came back from a vacation trip an found a zucchini that looked like a baseball bat!
