Hello and Intro- Western NYS

Hello,
I wanted to introduce myself and start participating in these forums. I am a SFG newbie, and after reading the posts on "how many squares do you have" probably considered a minimalist from a gardening perspective- I'm going to have 10 squares (2x1 foot boxes) that my husband is building, along with several containers. Our plan is to keep the boxes on our deck, so we wanted to be able to move them around easily.
I just picked up seeds today, and am probably a little late but that's ok.

Looking forward to learning more and participating here!

Hi, labbie, you have plenty of time! Tell us more about what you are looking for this year! 10 squares will get you so much food you won't believe it! Especially if you do succession planting of the squares, once one thing is done, put the next thing in...on and on.

Have you had a chance to read Mel Bartholomew's book, All New Square Foot Gardening? It is a really valuable resource. Your library probably has it, I highly recommend it.

What do you plan on planting? And what do you like to eat!

You are going to have so much fun and there is nothing better than eating your first lettuce or radishes.

I started tiny, and each year gradually extending my number of squares. It can be addicting, but in a wonderful way.

labbie, Welcome to the Forum from California! $glad you\'re here$ You have already received some good advice, especially about reading the book. Starting small is great, you can always build more boxes later. It can be addicting! Shocked

If you don't mind, I would like to modify your location from just the Zone to also include Western NYS. That will let folks know more about the climate and growing conditions.

I'm glad to hear I have time- looking out my window this morning I am more reassured- it is SNOWING!
I purchased seeds from a seed farm in my area and picked up:
Cherry Tomatoes- Heirloom Black Cherry
Carrots- Heirloom Paris Market
Hot Pepper- Early Jalapeno
Scallions- Heirloom Evergreen Hardy
Sweet Pepper- King Crimson
Lettuce- Winter Density
Lettuce- Gentilina
Cilantro- Caribe
Sweet basil- Genovese
Kale- Rainbow Lacinato
Watermelon- Sugar Baby

I'm going to put the watermelon in the ground, but everything else will be going in boxes/containers. I would still like to pick up some mint and maybe some baby spinach.

Hi and thank you!
We have the SFG book from our library and it's been so helpful. This is the first year in 5 years we are not joining a CSA, which I'm going to miss but looking at it as an opportunity to try growing some veggies of our own and supplement the rest with the Saturday farmers market in our town. With the CSA membership and processing all our yummy pickups, there didn't seem to be the time to do both. We are huge salad lovers, and I'm very interested in learning more about succession planting to see how long I can keep the lettuce and kale going. We do have some old raised beds along the sides of our house, so if the deck containers go okay we will consider expanding and putting more squares on the ground next year. They are a mess from the previous owners, so will focus on cleaning them up this year.

We had the pleasure of visiting Yukon Territory BC this past summer on a trip of a lifetime to Alaska. So very beautiful and we cannot wait to visit again!
Keeping SFG small is tough because we are very excited, but I really need to focus on success the first year, then expand next year. I'm looking forward to our first harvest!

I don't know anything about your climate, but you might want to look into growing a more heat tolerant lettuce that may not bolt as fast. Look at Johnny's Seeds website. They usually have good information and articles about cold hardy and heat tolerant lettuce to help you once the weather starts turning warmer.

It sounds like you have a good, solid plan in place. I am sure you will have success!!!
10 squares is a great starting number. Many people (including myself) start with too many squares and get a bit overwhelmed.

This is a great forum with great people that are glad to share their knowledge and experience, as I'm sure you can already tell!

+1 with starting with too many. I did that as well... (Well.... truthfully, a lot of that was DH who got into the swing of it & just kept going and going and going.... But I didn't object. That's my story & I'm sticking to it!!)

Perfect! I truly am really bad at succession planting, unless it is a different plant altogether. So If I am supposed to plant radishes every 2 weeks...will NOT happen. But for some reason if I change crops, yeah. Good to go. Why? No idea!

So I have a cabbage in the middle of my radishes. Cabbage will take all summer, radishes will be done by June. Can't wait to hear of your adventure! Keep notes! Did I say that already?
