Tornado Valley zone 5b

Anyone else live in the Tornado Valley? How can you protect your plants when high winds rip through the town. We often get wind storms and they destroy even big trees, pull down signs and make a mess of things.

Just another challenge for the gardener in Kansas. I haven't looked at the garden yet today but I am wondering if there are any plants left in my beds.

using trellis' really help.

i discovered that last year.

i haven't got my trellis' up yet for my tomatoes and other climbing plants and last night we had a pretty severe thunderstorm and high winds roll thru. . . my plants are looking pretty sad right now.

but i've also learned int he past that mel's mix has such good nutrients that many times, the plants bounce back - and grow back - i just remove all the broken limbs and in a couple of weeks, it's like nothing ever happened. . ..

I am still building my tellis. The only thing left it to put up the netting then let the plants start climbing. So far with all the wind we had I was lucky to not have alot of damage. I did have one broccoli try and walk away, I was able to push it back into the Mel's Mix. Turned out to be one of the nicer looking broccoli plants. I just hope these wind storms don't take down the trellis. I guess we will wait and see. Thanks for the Help.

as long as your buildings are standing, the trellis will remain. i have had trees uprooted - HUGE trees! near my house but my trellis' were fine. - but a cantaloupe did fall off the vine that day . . (we ate it btw and it was GOOD!) . . .

use the long strong rebar and put it down a couple feet in the ground, then slide the conduit over - so you'll have 2 feet in the ground, 2 feet above ground of rebar. held strong for me!! don't cut corners on that - use what mel suggests - the electrical conduit is seriously strong when paired with the rebar.

i'm heading out soon to see the final damage of my garden and water everything (trying to get in and stay in a routine of watering every morning that storms are not predicted/guaranteed). . .

Hm, maybe I should put in some longer rebar before I put up the netting. We do get some nasty storms in the summer. Ever have hail damage your garden? We had some hail the other night but it didn't last long and didn't fall very hard, lucky for my SFG.

no hail (yet) but i do have a 2 yr old - aka 'little tornado'. . . she's fast and likes to 'help weed' now. . . but since there are very few weeds, yup, she 'weeds' the real plants. . .

so it's gonna be interesting to see what survives. *grin*
