Hello from Northern California

Looks like a great forum.  I have been gardening most of my life.  We moved from the country into the suburbs two years ago.  Had to adjust from a giant garden down to a much smaller garden.  That has been hard!  Hope to learn some new tricks for making the most out a small space.

Jan, Welcome to the Forum from Fresno! One of my sons lives in Rocklin and the other used to live in Roseville.

Going from the country to a suburban lot can be a shock to a row gardener. But, as testimony from one who also lives in a 6,000 sq ft suburban lot, you can probably grow anything your heart desires. Only shade from the house, fences and trees limits the growing area(s). SFG is an intensive planting method in boxes instead of rows in the dirt. I had to go outside to count the latest number of 1-foot squares in boxes, and the tomato buckets and pots: 93 sq ft in the boxes, 11 extra tomatoes in buckets, plus 23 pots of peppers, flowers, and herbs. Another 4 large pots are awaiting the eggplants. Oh, and one cage of red potatoes and 2 storage totes of sweet potatoes.

First suggestion is to get hold of a copy of All New Square Foot Gardening, 1st or 2nd Edition, by Mel Bartholomew. It's easy but informative reading. As Audrey stated, photos of your area would really help us help you. What do you want to grow? We are here to help.
