Can't believe that I am running out of finished compost.  I have all of the MM back in the potato squares and have to start adding compost.  If I run out, what could I use?  I have a pile of grass clippings and a pile of pine/leaf partially rotted that I just raked out from around the pines today.  The worms were thick and had been working hard.  Don't want to add it to my compost bin yet but maybe when this batch is done.  So, my options are:

Unfinished compost
Dry grass clippings
Pine/leaf partially rotted

Oh, I could go to the edges of the woods and get dead leaves from last fall.

Will wait for an answer.

Thanks.

Hi greatgranny,

Potatoes really like pine needles so I would use that.  In fact, I would add some even if you have enough MM or finished compost for the rest of the season.

Good luck,
Gloria

Perfect timing. I hate to use good compost just on hilling. But pine needles I have plenty of. Yay!

I've also used straw and wood chips.  All have worked well.  In fact I just harvested 1/2 of my spring Yukon Golds this afternoon.  Looking forward to enjoying them tonight!

Thanks to all of you for your input.  I will probably combine the pine/leaves with some dried grass.  We have had so much rain that the grass is growing way faster than I can get it mowed - therefore a hay field.  I feel like I am a farmer after I get done.  Racking and hauling it to the pile is back breaking for an old lady but amazing how the more I do the better I feel.

Don't tell my kids I said that - they would never come over to help.   tongue
