I wouldn't go any more than 4 per. I was looking at mine this morning and thinking that one or two per would be best. They get wider than I expected.  I have nine in a four square row and they are shading the pea and bean sprouts in the rows on either side of  them. So then I harvested and gave away a bunch of outer leaves in order to stop them from blocking the sun.

I agree with CapeCoddess.  However, if you like to pick leaves (I do micro greens a lot) you can plant closer and just keep them picked frequently.

Ditto! Cannot wait to put my fall lettuces in! Thanks, Audrey!

My Matchless has done really well, still not bolted, forming butterheads. It is an heirloom variety. Am going to have to pick it this weekend. Been hot here. Maybe even tomorrow, not sure. Looks amazing.

I just planted mine, today.  Embarassed They're in Jiffy Pellets right now. When they sprout, I'll transplant them into the long containers where the worms ate the romaine. Rolling Eyes My idea is to put them out every night, then bring them in every morning when we turn on the a/c. Fingers crossed. I have never been successful with lettuce, but I am determined this year. From what I've read, aphids can be a problem, so I'm going to keep them isolated as much as possible.

The Marvels started bolting on the summer solstice here. The temps are about the same as before, averaging low 70s day and high 50s at night, so I'm guessing it has to do with daylight length? Or maybe the heat of the direct Sun? Not sure but the solstice is a good indicator for me. The leaves are still tasty, not bitter, if I pick them early in the morning before the Sun hits them.
