Post  lisamari0403 4/22/2014, 8:50 pm

i just trimmed a bunch of leaves off my cukes and tomato plants. My questions is do i have to trash the whole plant or will the vegetables be ok?? Also, on the tomato plant, the stem looks to have the mildew too and there are tomatoes growing right on that stem. What should i do about those tomatoes?
thanks in advance for any advice. i am a beginner and loving it!!!! Very Happy

WELCOME, Lisa!

When I got started here I spent hours reading old threads - there is a wealth of information in them, including an organic spray that helps deal with powdery mildew.  You should not have to lose the plants.

I spray Neem oil every week or so and it prevents it from getting started except for the late summer when we start cooling down and the humidity goes up.  Even still it's much less than I had before spraying them.

I forget the recipe for treating actual outbreaks, but it's in here :-)

thank you!! I have been addicted to reading all the posts and i have seen some of the other threads on PM, but i haven't seen if the PM is on the stem that has vegetables on it if the Veggies will be affected??
I am definitely going today to get the Neem oil as i would like the least toxic solution available. I really just wanted to confirm weather or not i needed to start over with a new one!!

Im super excited to be on this forum!! i have already learned so much more as a greenie!!  Very Happy  Laughing  bounce

Here's a helpful thread.  The second post down has some good links the first of which has the spray I used last year to good effect.  I certainly wouldn't pull the plants without fighting for them first.  LINK:  https://squarefoot.forumotion.com/t8633-powdery-mildew?highlight=powdery+mildew+spray

1.  Make some bleach water solution to dip your cutters in after EVERY cut.  Otherwise you risk spreading it.
2.  Cut off all infected leaves and throw away or burn.
3.  Spray the plants.  I would spray with the mildew killing solution and then wait a day to spray with Neem oil.
4.  A weekly Neem oil application for a few weeks then I'm usually able to spray Neem every other week and keep pests in control.  That will depend on your area.  California has less bugs than other places so you might need more.

Hi Lisa,

Can you post a photo of your plant with the mildew on the stem? I get PM all the time but not on the stems.  Makes me wonder if it's something else.
