I used to buy seeds from Burpee. A wide selection of varieties, but they are much more expensive than the same varieties when you find them in local stores, even before you add shipping. One year, I bought some of my seeds from Walmart. They were Burpee brand, and I got zero percent germination. I've been pleased with seeds from local nurseries, but they are more expensive than Walmart. Even Walmart seems to be raising their prices.

So, considering available varieties, germination rates, and price, which sellers (mail order or local) have you been happiest with, especially in SE WI?

Last year I bought some seed in 1 dollar packets from I think it was good ol' Home Depot. Got Detroit dark red beets, scarlet nantes carrots, early crookneck yellow squash, all .99 cent packs.  Couldn't plant it all and will have more for this year.  I admit most of my seeds though are from Baker and Seed Savers.

I usually get most of my seeds from the local grain and garden store. Sometimes I buy those ¢20 packets at Walmart and I have had success with them. I always check the dates on the packages.

Another way I get seeds is by trading.

Some seeds are heritage and I have to order those special and usually FEDCO or High Mowing has what I want.

I get most of my seeds from Baker Creek and Jung.  I've also used Territorial, Botanical Interests, and Gurney's (and would also recommend those, especially the first two since I think Gurney's selection is small, but I had a 50% off online code so I got a few things).  I try to keep my seed purchases to 2 sources to limit shipping costs.

I get my seed from lots of sources, depending on just what I want. This yr. I decided to go with a hybrid tomato, so I ordered from Burpee. Jung is a good cat. and if you look for them, they have a group of seed that is recommended by Mel B. I ordered from there and those seeds grew really well!

This year I've ordered from 2 in-state heirloom seed vendor/farmers that I discovered through
http://www.localharvest.org/.  This is a fantastic resource for finding farms, services, CSAs, etc. in your local area.  In fact, you can search seed providers and make purchases directly from them, through that website!  I would've never known about the farmers that I ordered from had I not visited the site.  Plus, I know that the seed they carry has produced in my local climate, and many heirloom stories come along with those varieties.
The local farmer's co-op is my other source, for sure.

Baker Creek is awesome.  I also support my local nursery, Family Tree & Nursery that is just a mile away from the house.  I buy a lot of my bulk items from them since it doesn't cost to ship.  Most of my seeds come from Baker Creek -- and I try to buy heirlooms so I can save the seeds for the next year!

I LOVE Baker Creek for several reasons. I love that they are so committed to educating the public about GMOs. They've sent me a free package of heirloom seeds each time I've ordered.

Their seed catalog is very informative. You can request a free one at: Baker Creek Catalog Request

Not to sound like a broken record, but Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds and TomatoFest (which also sends along a free pack of seeds with your order).  I also pour over Seed Savers Exchange's catalog, and usually find some things I didn't know I needed, like the Zimmerman cucumber I want to try for pickles, and the St. Valery carrots.  A lot of our seeds over the years has come from Territorial Seed Company, an Oregon family-owned company; and last year I discovered a small local heirloom seed company which has seeds particularly well suited to this climate: Victory Seed Company from Molalla, Oregon.  Still looking for the perfect crops to grow here in the hills west of St. Helens.  Nonna

We have a local nursery that is only open from sometime in March to sometime in July, depending on weather. I have had really good success with every plant I have purchased there. There is also another big greenhouse about 45 min. away, but worth the drive. Very popular, if you don't get there early in the season, you just miss out!

I used Patriot Supply last year for more basic vegetable & herb seeds.  They dont really have any fancy varieties, but are cheap and all are heirloom, open pollinated, GMO-free.  My seeds all did great.  This year, Ill order from Seed Savers or Bakers creek for different, not so common varieties.
