My family is putting our roots down in Northeast Arkansas. We're glad we found SFG to help us in the move here. New to the area, new to SFG, and ready to enjoy spring! We're building boxes, making compost, and gathering the ingredients for Mel's Mix. I have three seasons of Midwest gardening behind me, so have a lot more to learn.

My last frost date looks to be April 2nd. I just got Cauliflower, Broccoli, Red Cabbage, Leeks, and some Kale germinating. I also have a lot of lettuces and early spring root veggies to put in the ground, too.

Our big concern is how to fight off our yard full of bermuda grass! I've read a number of threads on that, already. Smaller concern is acquiring quality compost. I didn't have trouble finding vermiculite. I have a compost tumbler that is food scraps and pine pellets only. But I guess we need to find some manures, too.

Bermuda grass can be tough! A few layers of cardboard or several layers of newspaper under the Mel's Mix can help to smother grass and weeds where you are setting your boxes. Weed cloth can help as well, but I have had better success with the cardboard. I fight quack grass and bindweed here. Another option is to physically remove the grass from the areas before setting your boxes (dig or pull). Personally I did not have the energy for that and I have had no real problems with grass coming up in my beds. I have one bed that is plagued with bindweed and another with phlox, but the other 8 are doing great! (The phlox bed did not get any cardboard, newspaper, or weed cloth - turning it into a Pollinator Garden)
