Is it too late for lettuce?
In the past I have only grown tomatoes, cukes, squash and beans. I have never grown any cool crops that require planting before last frost. Is it too late for me to grow some leaf lettuce from seed in zone 7b (black simpson, mesclun, and a gourmet blend of grand rapids/salad bowl/red salad bowl/oakleaf and prizeleaf)?
I have read of some growing them in among taller plants for shade. I have a space next to the house that stays cool and only get morning sun, do you think that would work?
If its not too late, when would my cut-off date be?
TIA,
Rebecca

Re: Is it too late for lettuce?
I'm in zone 8A and just planted my last batch of mixed lettuces yesterday. Mine are in a bed that will be shaded from about 1 pm on. They won't get very large and will bolt quickly, but should last for a few weeks of harvest. If I were you I wouldn't go overboard -- perhaps two or three squares as they will bolt fairly quickly.
