Too Late Lettuce
Howdy,
I live near Richmond VA. Is it too late to plant spinach and lettuce?
Thanks

Re: Too Late Lettuce
Your average first frost date is around the end of October. Spinach is very cold hardy so you probably have time to start it now. But it won't grow much during the colder months but should take off in the early spring.
Lettuce all depends on the variety and if you are able to give it any frost/freeze protection.

Bart, look at the "days to maturity" on the package. I just planted a mesclun mix, a kale, and radishes all from seeds. We will see!

Re: Too Late Lettuce
Bart, I echo what yolos said about variety playing a big part in when it is appropriate to plant lettuce. I plant mesclun varieties in late fall for cold weather harvest. However, I do have to cover them if cold temps reach extremes. Also, my favorite variety of kale is Russian Red (a Siberian variety). That stuff won't die even in the coldest of temps. And... best of all, when frost hits, it turns sweet.
