Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Just lettuce. My stuff sown last fall and winter either died (spinach, kale), is too stunted to be worth anything (kale), bolted right away (kale again!), or is just sitting there with its big fat face hanging out, doing nothing (brussels sprouts).
Hooray for lettuce! Particularly the red roma. It's been doing so well even in cold nights and very hot (95 degrees!) days.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
No, I didn't take pictures. Last year, I planted second-year Jersey Knight crowns.
Although there were three or four big enough to harvest and eat, I decided to wait.
So far THIS year, some of my spears have suffered from frost damage; I now know that spears, unlike crowns, are frost-sensitive.
I currently have one or two breaking ground. If they're of sufficient diameter, I'll harvest and eat them. By next year, though, I should have a bounty of asparagus! Perhaps, though, I should plant a couple more squares....

and we ate
almost the last of the Royal Burgundy and Provider green beans and Kobocha squash, 1/2 inch slices brushed with coconut oil, kosher salt and pepper and baked. The Kobocha is a volunteer and tasty!!
We have been picking a lot of lettuce - romaine, red curly something or other, green curly, and lovely endive.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
I got one snap pea (more coming) and one blueberry this morning. The blueberry bushes had berries on them when I bought and planted 2 weeks ago. I expect the birds to get them this year, but NEXT YEAR they are MINE.

That sounds good! But I have to say Plantoid that you are amazing...please share your secret! I need to know how you managed to eat herbs that aren't even grown yet cause I would love to have some of my tomatoes can't wait for the first ripe one of the season.plantoid wrote:All the dried herbs in my home made pork sausage meat balls with home grown thick slightly spicy tomato sauce as in a meat balls & spaghetti meal .

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Two of my elephant garlics -- the two biggest -- bolted and sent up seed stalks. I snapped them off and took a nibble at the bottom end -- well I'll be darned, they really do taste like garlic. Exactly like it. Mild too, but unmistakeable and good enough to use anywhere I'd use garlic. I suppose I'll chop up the stalks and put them in something tonight. They're strong enough that I couldn't just throw them in a salad.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Kay - a friend suggested putting plastic snakes in our blueberries last year to chase the birds off. You have to move them around every day, but they work! We got 3+ gallons off of 5 bushes. You can get the snakes at Wally-world for $1 or so.
SG - Looks great!
Marc - So what did you do with them?

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Zucchini "pasta" tonight. Harvested 2 onions this morning so I'll have to figure out what to do with one of them. tomatoes, salad and strawberries for dessert!

I chopped them up, sauteed them in butter, and spread them over thick slices of toasted home-made rosemary bread for a variation on regular garlic bread. Very good, and the green color added nice visual interest.
Ate some more fava beans today. Sampled a green roma lettuce; it has gone bitter, so even though it has been a very nice and strong survivor, I'll pull it and use the space for something else.

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
Eh heh! I just bought that very same packet a couple days ago, then realized I wouldn't be planting it for months. I'm just so desperate for anything spinach-like since my spinach has been nothing but fail from last fall.
Looks like a really interesting plant, and like it would make a salad plate especially beautiful. I "cook" and etc. for some very visual people, and that counts for a lot. I look forward to growing some this fall, and hope I can dress up lots of salad bowls with it. Any tips on its preparations?

Re: What are you eating from your garden today?
We just had our first for the season all garden meal. Orach, chives, asparagus, mint chicken curry on quinoa.
Marc, try planting some of the orach right now, it is an amazingly forgiving plant. True it is one of the first plants to sprout in my garden each spring so it does like cool soil.

I harvested these today! Not sure how many will last until tomorrow...
I think my sunflower plant can take me in a fair fight...it's taller than me, and it keeps giving me dirty looks.
