Fresh kale and 2013 garlic in a spicy turkey sausage soup. I hope to add my own tomatoes, onion and potatoes this year.

I'm glad I posted to this topic because I have 2 Utah celery to wrap, and this topic had good photos from Rose.

Sugar snap peas.  But so far none of them have made it out of the garden before they have been eaten.

of current produce from the garden.  Picked a red cabbage for dinner tonight as well as mustard greens, sugar snap peas and endive. Lindsey picked about 3 pounds of burgundy and green beans.

We are starting a spread sheet of planting and harvesting. I'll let you know if it is worth posting in weeks to come.

Peas. So. Many. Peas.  I'm picking probably a pound every other day right now.

Harvested some radishes, ate some of the little ones.

That's about it so far.

How awesome that you're getting that many peas. I've planted dozens and they're just a few inches high, but progressing nicely so far. I would be ecstatic if I could get your results!

I've got ten growing lettuces and another four lettuce seeds planted. My lettuces aren't terrifically robust and I'm lucky to get a salad every two or three days out of them. Lamb's lettuce/mache/corn salad is finally coming out of its torpor and growing nicely, though. But it takes a ton of them to add up to any real volume. I think our weather must be confusing as heck to plants; 78 today and nights that can get under 40. Dry for weeks and then rain for a week. The only thing I ate from my garden today was peppermint.

Couldn't say re climate change, but last year we had the hottest and driest summer in 30 years followed by the coldest and driest winter in 30 years. And a couple of years ago we saw snow almost up to June in a climate that generally gets little snow all year.

I've been growing Thomas Laxtons (heirloom), both this year and last, with stellar results.  I think I might try that heirloom that had purple pods and green foliage...has to be a lot easier to find the pods!

When the heat really kicks in, the plants will slow down a fair bit, but right now they are doing great.

I planted them all on January 12th, and had sprouts on January 28th.  First bloom was March 8th.  Our overnight lows when I planted were in the mid-40s, and we were having somewhat unseasonably warm days, anywhere from 60s to low 70s.  Once they got established, there was no stopping them. Smile

I planted all three plots at the same time, but only the two that got solid sun where the blocks would warm up had good germination.  The one plot that got a lot of shade?  Out of 16 plantings, maybe four plants, and only two that survived.  The other two plots went 15/16, but looked like they were succession planted (Plot A came up first, then Plot B a week or so later) even though they all went in the ground on the same night.

Just a few sorrel leaves in a salad, I'm afraid.  But I expect to direct-sow some cold-tolerant veggies today, as well as pot up my tomato and broccoli seedlings.

FYI, NOAA, et al., predict a good chance of a strong El Nino this year.  That would most likely bring a lot of rain and snow to the West Coast this winter.

Boy can we use it - of course we'll end up with flooding and hillside slides (it is California after all!)  But our farmers are desperate.  The state is just letting water go straight out to the sea and farm areas have 50% unemployment and the nation's food prices are skyrocketing all to protect a "bait fish"

Okay, off my soap box now  Razz  Very Happy

I will have my first zucchini tomorrow or Wed.  We are eating tomatoes that I grew through the winter, mini bell peppers, hot peppers, cilantro, loads of lettuce, kale, swiss chard and spinach.  OH and strawberries as of yesterday!

Used a jar of canned tomatoes to make beef/sweet Italian sausage sauce in lasagna. Included the last roasted garlic bulb from 2013 harvest.  Have 5 jars tomatoes left from 13.

What a fun "game" - but, sadly, I can't really play as the only thing available from my garden is worms (no thank you!).  However, I'll say that I wish I was eating cherry tomatoes because yesterday I made an appetizer for an "Italian" themed lunch of Caprese Skewers with Balsamic Dressing (cherry tomato + part of a basil leaf + fresh mozzarella pearl on a toothpick) and they were so amazing that I wish I still had some to eat!

So I'm lopping of the heads off my basil seedlings growing in the window and decided to make a melted soy cheese and basil open face sandwich. And what jumps out on to my hand? A friggin leafhopper! Couldn't believe my eyes!

So I squashed it and then ate his house: What are you eating from your garden today? - Page 22 Img_2065

Sugar Snap peas, kale, broccoli, lettuce, strawberries, and the garden peas (shelling) are just about ready.  The next 5 days we are having a cool down here in Ga so the garden peas should keep producing.
