How vegetables look when sprouting... source?
Perhaps I've been using the wrong keywords... Can anyone point me to a gallery of pictures that show what different vegetables look like when they're just sprouting? I have a weed problem in my box that has my home-grown compost (I told my whole family not to put weeds in there, but )
Every time I search, I get pictures of someone's salad.

Try searching for seedling instead of sprouting. I had the same problem recently, but I was trying to identify the weeds that were sprouting.

Probably not tremendously helpful, but I've noticed weeds do one thing pretty consistently:
grow faster than everything else!
Other than that, I really don't know what to tell you...cotyledons from related families all look so similar, it's dumb. I was convinced for weeks I had transplanted a crenshaw melon until some serious true leaves came out, and it turned out to be a cucumber....seed leaves are incredibly uninformative.

I think my sunflower plant can take me in a fair fight...it's taller than me, and it keeps giving me dirty looks.

Also if you grow carrots and Queen Anne's Lace grows anywhere in the vicinity, it's nearly impossible to tell the difference till you harvest.
When you plant seeds using the 1,4,9 etc. sq. ft. garden pattern and water gently then it's usually easy to spot the weeds that grow outside of the pattern.

If in doubt, pull it up and stick it in a a little pot. Little dittie I just made up - but it will work for you. Although what llama said is true. if you follow the sowing recommendations in the book; the weed will be the one that's not in formation

Seedling was definitely the word I was looking for!
Thanks so much everyone for all the advice. I probably did pull up a few spinach plants, but there were definitely a lot of weeds in there too! I didn't want to let the weeds get a foothold in there (roothold?).
