It's still a bit cool and I am itching to get into the gardens. Hello from Alberta & Chinese Vegetables. Icon_flower This year my new addition will be at least one SFG and I am very excited. We have a short growing season here but I am determined.

Has anyone had an experience growing Chinese vegetables? Hello from Alberta & Chinese Vegetables. Icon_study I would like to try bok choi and a few others.

Thanks,
Susan Hello from Alberta & Chinese Vegetables. Icon_cool

HI,

Welcome to the forum. Glad to see you made it, as I hadn't run into that type of registration problem before.

As you look around the forum, you can see that a lot of us are getting itchy feet! There's more and more folks from Canada showing up, so be sure to check out your regional forum.

I'm sure someone with more experience than I can offer suggestions about Chinese vegetables.

Happy gardening

I planted Chinese Artichokes this year. It's my first time. I planted one per square. I made a row of squares along a fence line. I might add a second row of different plants in front of that though.

Hello from Alberta & Chinese Vegetables. Empty Growing Chinese Greens

Post  BertieFox 5/4/2010, 3:13 pm

I am currently growing a Chinese cabbage, Pet-Sai, Monument, four to a square, and they have been doing fabulously. You get so much leaf from them, and at close spacing they sort of blanch themselves while they are growing. Although normally recommended for autumn sowing to avoid bolting, I sowed these in early April and they are showing no signs of bolting, though they get very well watered.
I'd also really recommend Mizuna Greens, at a spacing of nine per square, as you can cut these as cut and come again leaves for stir fry or steaming. I've also got some Kailaan, Chinese Kale, but these are still just young seedlings.

Hello from Alberta & Chinese Vegetables. Empty Chinese veggies in Canada

Post  dstubbs 5/13/2010, 3:40 pm

Hi,

I'm really new at this and so have no advice to offer you, but I'm trying a few Asian vegetables in my own SFG and would be interested to hear how you make out. I've planted Chinese eggplants (which I love), and a couple of experimental things I wasn't familiar with before such as "small leaf radish sai sai" (I gather you eat the leaves) and "radish watermelons" (which look like a cross between a radish and a watemelon but the package describes as being like a turnip!). Good luck!

I am very new to this too. I direct-seeded some extra-dwarf bok choi and it came up alongside my other cool weather plants, though, so give it a try! Very Happy

Hello from Alberta & Chinese Vegetables. Empty Seed source for chinese vegetables

Post  Maya Papaya 5/13/2010, 9:38 pm

I can offer no experience because this is my first time with a garden, but I have a pretty cool seed source for chinese veggies: kitazawaseed.com. I just bought some seeds from them.

I know there is a seed section, but I thought this person would be interested in that website.

Cheers,

Maya

It's my first year of SFG, and I'm growing bok choy; they are looking great, and grow very fast so I think I'll definitely grow them again.
I have found a brilliant book about oriental vegetables, with tons of information about varieties, how to grow them and when, and how to avoid the typical problems with them, such as bolting. You can take a look at a few chapters here, to see if it's something you'd like to buy or borrow from a library:

Nope. The butterfly one says "sorry, out of stock" but I'll keep watching it.
