Ooooo,ooooo,oooooo! Found this site that will email you what to plant right now, either in the ground or indoors, based on your zip code. You can even sign up to have seeds sent, or just get an email. Or just put in your zip and see what to do now. So cool.

This site looks great except for one thing. I am not sure if the planting dates for some things are accurate. For instance, for my zip code (30205) it said to plant canteloupes outside on the week of Feb 25. That is way too early. They will freeze for sure. My last frost, depending on what site I go to, is around April 1-15. I have a 90% chance of 32* weather on Mar 13 and 50% chance on March 29. The University of Ga planting chart says plant canteloupe after March 25 for middle Ga and two weeks later for North Ga. I am between middle and north georgia so I interpret the planting date for cantelope to be about April 1 for my zip code.

Anybody else see flaws in the planting dates or is this just a rare error for my zip code. There may be other errors in the site but I stopped looking when I got to the canteloupes.

I too, found a couple listings that are a bit early acording to the USF guide.

My guess is that is the correct time to sow seed inside so you may transplant the cantaloupe into the garden at the end of March or the beginning of April. That timeline seems to be correct, they just seem to have forgotten the words 'start inside'. What a Face

Overall I like this program, as far as I have seen there is no one program that does everything for me, but I like that this one will send me reminders. However it is good to know the frost and planting dates for the area where one lives so little errors like this will be noted.
The folks at Sprout Robot may like to know about the error so it can be corrected. Wink

I find the dates late, even for starting indoors, but I signed up to get the reminder in case I forget. It won't hurt to get a nudge that I need to get moving if I've missed something.
In my area the last frost dates and first have changed by a few weeks in recent years.

Mostly it seems right on. The advice for chard and corn seem off by a month or more. Interesting that there are no transplant date suggestions. Maybe that happens when you sign up for the service.

Chopper, thanks for sharing this! I find I have already had several of the ones that it says "to plant this week" in the ground some time ago, so I might learn a valuable thing or two. But I am pleased to say we will be having fresh green beans for Christmas dinner from the garden!

just went back and double checked plant timer against usf planting guide-plant timer was right in the ballpark. guess it's time to have my glasses cheched. also looks like i better get crackin.

For fun I would sow some cantaloupes outside and see what happens. Smile

Way off for me. For example, it tells me to start tomatoes indoors Mar 25th. Um, I put tomato transplants out on Valentine's Day.

LOL Oh, this one's really funny! Plant spinach Aug 26th. It'll be 100+ that day with a nighttime low of about 80. Even planting it indoors wouldn't help as we continue solidly in the 90s through the end of October.

But I'm used to these calculators not knowing what to do with my area. Trouble comes as they run a formula off first/last frost dates and we don't really have those, just a "window" of about 6 weeks right at the end/beginning of the year when we may or may not get a freeze.

I feel that the only thing you really need is in Mel's ANSFG book it is the first and last frost date charts ..
They work in any area of the world . You pick up the rest of the info off the seed packets .

I agree with Plantoid and Audrey......I set up my garden plan according to Mel's book. I only have to find the current year's first frost dates and then I'm good to go. Its worked the last 3 years even tho my frost dates have changed to earlier dates. I just start seeds indoors or outdoors according to the number of weeks in Mel's charts.
The e-mail reminders are just an afterthought in case I forget to start something on my current list.
