This year I am re-doing my herb garden. It is a work in progress, but at least there is some progress!

Last spring, before anything sprouted for the year:

Yesterday, after 2 evenings of digging out and sorting herbs from weeds, with help carrying bricks from the 2 neighbor boys (I will try to get a picture of them in later!)

It is still in progress, as I am going to build an L-shaped box to go against the shed and line the patio side of the bed. Hopefully I will be able to get the lumber for that on Friday and on the long weekend I can get that built.

Nice Job Goosegirl! It's fun to upgrade the looks of things and be creative at the same time. Should be a fulfilling weekend for you. Looking forward to more pictures and Go Goosey Go!

Nice going Goosegirl!! I have about 1300 of those red bricks with the three holes in them. I am thinking about doing a similar garden and plant it exclusively with strawberries. I will probably do it later in the season to get it ready for next year. Right now I am busy with my first year SFG. I still have to get some supplies for three more trellis panels, but I am doing a little everyday. For a garden less than two weeks old it is starting to look pretty good. I hope to take some pictures this weekend.

This took just about 50 bricks - they came free with the house, I found them thrown under the deck. I never thought about strawberries, but this would be a perfect arrangement for them! I found the design when I did a 'net search for 'herb bed designs' and up popped Spiral Herb Bed (or Garden, can't remember now!), complete with a 'how to' video.

I am thinking of a large circle, three or four tiers, but only 3/4 of the circle. Or maybe an "L" shape. That should leave me with access to the center from the missing quarter circle. My bricks also came free when I bought my last house. I just could not see leaving them behind when I sold it. I also have a big pile of flagstone free from someone who was tearing out a landscape wall. I'm sure that will come in handy, too.

Correction - 41 bricks! And, it is now done and boxes filled. Will post a pic as soon as the thunderstorm passes and it stops hailing (bb-size, we are on the fringe of the storm).

Decided against the L-shaped box and made 2 separate boxes and put my pavers on the ends of them.

Boxes are filled with what I am calling Almost Mel's Mix. Peat, vermiculite, and unfinished compost consisting of straw, grass clippings, and the potting soil from a HUGE tree pot (I managed to kill the tree). The grass clippings were showing that nice white moldy/smoky looking stuff which means they are composting nicely. I don't have any plans for these beds this season unless I want to try some randomly scattered flower seeds or maybe throw in some bean seeds since they make their own nitrogen very nicely. The mulch around the boxes and bricks is more of the partially composted straw from my big compost pile.

A big improvement in the herb bed. After I finish hanging our new storm door, I may start on my drum composter if I have any energy left!

PS - In the last pic, WAAAAAAY in the back of the bed, there is a little green patch in the bare brown. It is the day lily I planted at the end of last season to complete the arc of day lilies around the curved bed. I thought it had not survived, but when I was pulling out all the sunflowers and quack grass I found a little sprout! It is now cleaned, mulched, and seeing sunshine.

In the upper left-hand corner where the L's come together would be a great spot for a largish potted, flowering plant or herb....

I may do something similar after my move to Oregon next month.

That is EXACTLY what I planned! This Year's Project 3170584802

I almost took out that paver to slide the box up and make the L, but I thought it would be PERFECT for a large potted plant that I can move indoors before snow flies.

I am really happy with how it turned out, and I bet my neighbors are as well, since no one around here has fences and they had to look at my weed patch! Now, to work on the truckload of branches I still have to get rid of............

Last weekend I got the base with casters put together for my drum composter. This afternoon I went out to work on the barrel. The #%$*& saw wouldn't work! I borrowed it from work and I hope they don't make ME replace it when it did not work the first time I tried it! I know it was not the plug or the extension cord because I had just used the drill in that extension cord to try out the first few air holes. So, I finished drilling all the air holes in the drum and will have to get my own drill on ebay.....

When they are not snoozing, they are at the screen door watching what I am doing in the garden, and sometimes 'talking' to me. Of course I 'talk' back, and the neighbors probably think I am nuts!
