Without going thru this whole thread, does anyone out there plant garlic in the same box year after year? I never have but this year the only free box is the garlic box.

That's a good question.

Some people swear by it.

However, I called a local CSA several months ago and was told never to do so.

My only experience was two years of garlic and onions in the same bed; the second year produced some pretty large garlic! When I moved the bed last year, the results were pitiful.

You guys remember this thread? Well I thought I'd resurrect it by asking a "please give me some advice question."

I planted my garlic in October, but I never weeded it until about early February (I think). Unfortunately, because I failed to weed, my garlic bulbs are really puny right now. Arggh! The previous two years I raised garlic, they were quite large by now.

Do you guys think if I add some compost right about now I might be able to rescue these? Should I be adding compost now anyway? I never did add compost the previous two years and maybe if I had, my garlic would have been even larger.

They look alright to me, Windmere; after all they still have some months to harvesting so plenty of time to grow.

They look good to me, too. I vote to add it now if you haven't done it yet this year. I added compost to mine once the compost defrosted, along with adding it to all my other boxes, too. It's a spring thing. I'll add some more when the garlic is about 6"- 8" tall around mid season.

Has anyone moved garlic at this time of the year? The stems are just starting to thicken and they are a long way from forming cloves. I need the box.

I need my planting area also but I have never tried transplanting.

sanderson, you need to think "outside the box". Laughing

I think what you need is a skyscraper approach. Go multiple floors with a good space between floors (SFG boxes) to allow light to get to each level. Of course you will need ladders (or an elevator) and a safety harness when tending to the boxes higher up.

I moved a garlic, some onions, and a couple of Egyptian walking onions recently. So far, they're doing well.

When did you originally start the garlic and onions? In the fall? These were planted in Oct.

I just finished my first new bed it's a 4' X 10' X 8" as I'm building new beds I'm tearing out the old ones, problem is I have Garlic & onions planted in the old beds that I want to transplant, Is that possible? We still haven't had frost yet, been close but hasn't happened yet, This morning my soil temperature was 62 F. still have green tomatoes on the vines hoping some will ripen .

Yes , I do for garlic & onions , so do the Italians & French year after year so long as the ground is not infected with byroitis ( SP?) fungi aka onion rot fungi .

Some of the French onion & garlic beds are in excess of 150 years old apparently .
As soon as the crops are harvested the whole bed is rejuvenated by a layer of hot composted manures , straw \7 garden waste .

( look up " Monty Don , gardening in France " there might be a BBC iPlayer or video clips showing some .

The bed needs good fertility & excellent drainage . Two foot deep MM beds are really good , they also need full sunlight all the time for a good crop .

So If you live in rainy climes you might find growing a onions, garlic & to a lesser extend leeks difficult .

If the bed gets " sick " you can't grow alliums there for about seven years .

Yes. Do it. Garlic needs 2 weeks of non frozen ground to get anchored. Take notes!

Pulled my winter garlic yesterday. They were badly infested with black aphids. ??? I ended up pulling the carrots and flowering bok choy, everything. I'm going to try spring planting garlic in another bed. Can't do any worse. Embarassed

Wow! That's A LOT of aphids! Did you wash the plants off and replant them somewhere? Or was the garlic ready to pull?

Aphids make me crazy, especially on my edible leafy greens! But I was thinking that this year, if I can't 'hard spray' them off, I might leave them and see if the lady bugs and such come.

I know it's too late but do you think they would have harmed the garlic bulb if water sprayed off every time they got out of hand?
