Martha, another artichoke lover 
I am curious as to whether artichokes will overwinter in your gardening zone.
I moved from zone 8 to zone 5 last year and was determined to have artichokes. (they grew like weeds down in Eugene)
Since they flower in their second year, I planted 7 plants and extensively prepared them for winter with thick layers of straw, cardboard, metal brace with tarp over it.(last fall)
luckily 4 of them seem to have survived, so am hoping for some artichokes this year.
With my seedlings this year, I have read about a process where you expose them to cold for at least 2 weeks, and you can trick them into thinking it is their second year, so I have left those poor little seedlings out in the cold, even frost, with hopes I can get THOSE plant to flower this year.
Just a thought...

Is there a way to control the spread of the plant? I have one that fills a 4x4. Only one fruit growing so far.

GWN, I am HOPING to have my unheated green house by this fall. It was supposed to be built this spring, but the person who was going to build it is moving to California instead.

I am allowing for about 6 feet for each plant
I have planted them in pots about 1 foot across, with the bottoms cut off
I have dug down about another foot and put in potting soil and then I have filled the bottomless pot with Mels Mix
This year I am going to dig them up in the fall and store in my greenhouse unheated.
What I did in Eugene, was divide them in the fall and then pot the tubers up early in the spring for MORE plants.
So hope to try that here this year.
Perhaps start heating the greenhouse in FEB with a small space heater.
