Hi all!
I have a bunch of free San Marzano Tomato Seeds to give away. We are trying to get a California Initiative on the November ballot to label genetically modified foods (GMO's). Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company was gracious enough to give away these seeds and had an informative seed packet made up so we can educate more people and hopefully get them to sign our petition. Here's a link to more information on the matter.

If anyone is interested in some seeds, let me know! I have plenty to give out. Smile

I got one of those seed packets in the mail. What can you tell me about the San Marzano tomatoes? Likes/dislikes? Uses? I'm trying to decide if I can make room for one of them this year.

San Marzanos are a great paste tomato. If you like making your own tomato sauce, they're for you. Very meaty with fewer seeds in the centers.

Above: San Marzano Nano variety. There are different kinds of San Marzano toms so I'm trying to add more varieties to my seed shelf.

I haven't yet made my own sauce. Are they good for eating or maybe for dehydrating?

You don't have to know how to make your own sauce. You can roast them in the oven slowly (with their skins) and freeze them. When you are serving a sauce dish or bottled sauce or a can of tomatoes or chili or anything needing tomatoes, just toss in a bagful, even still frozen. They'll defrost in the saucepan. I posted a recipe for the roasted tomatoes last year. Mmmmm good. Even eating after roasting. We take some for our meal as a side dish and put the rest in freezer bags for winter servings.

But, yes, they are also good eating raw. I have them in salads all the time. I never dehydrated, but I hear they are the best for that because they aren't as juicy as slicing tomatoes so are easier to do and faster to finish.

I would love some. I am in Murrieta. Maybe I could swing by or we could meet somewhere?

gweiher.....Go back to Andreaa's post and look below her name on the left for a little box with a thing that looks like half a person in it with the letters PM beside it. Click on that and another box opens where you can send her a PM (private message) where its safe to add your full name and mailing address. Usually a SASE is asked for when just getting seeds and not exchanging them, but she'll let you know when she answers and give you her mailing address.

When you get an answer to your PM, the 'PM' at the very top of the page lights up in red and flashes. Click on that and it opens to where the PM is posted to you.
