Dehydrated Cow Manure
I bought 10 bags of last year's stock for $1 per 25 lbs bag of Dehydrated Cow Manure. To make MM, should I just add to four other compost sources, or throw it on the compost pile?

I would just add the other composts and begin making the Mel's mix. There should be no reason to have to wait if it already composted. By the way, nice find!tomperrin wrote:I bought 10 bags of last year's stock for $1 per 25 lbs bag of Dehydrated Cow Manure. Growers' Association Cooperative, Tabernacle, NJ. They don't like to sell stuff by the one's and two's. They are more interested in selling in quantity.

Re: Dehydrated Cow Manure
I've been looking around for Black Kow in my area and I can't find it. One garden center I was at today had dehydrated cow manure and composted(?) cow manure. While I was there I didn't think to ask someone what the difference was. Is there a difference?
Black Kow is out of the question for me so I'm looking at another alternative.

Do you live in the city or the country?... have you hunted up any farmers to ask about composted manure?

Re: Dehydrated Cow Manure
Can anyone tell me the difference between Black Kow(name brand, I guess) and composted cow manure and dehydrated cow manure?
Is the dehydrated considered composted enough to use in garden?
We have the products using the wording but the bag doesn't tell the answer.

Hey Too Tall
If you are anywhere near Harrisburg there is a SFG teacher listed on Craigslist and he does complete setup and sells ready made mix. Plus I saw a bunch of free manure/compost listed too.

So it looks like the only difference is one is dry and the other isn't. I guess I'll just use whatever is cheaper.
To answer your other question, yes....I do live in the country. I can probably score all the cow manure I would possibly need but I would want to be sure that if a farmer tells me the manure is composted, it's really composted. Unless it's just a matter of smell. Composted cow manure doesn't have much of an odor and fresh....well it's fresh.

Yes...I spoke to him at the Pennsylvania Garden Expo this year. He's a nice guy.....seems to know his stuff.
I have more compost than I need for my boxes. It's a great blend of kitchen scraps, fall leaves, horse manure, rabbit manure, alpaca manure, and even fish guts from a local hatchery. It's a good enough compost to use for Mel's Mix but since I didn't add any cow manure to it, I'm looking at getting already-composted cow manure. And if I can find composted chicken manure at the garden center I'm going to on Wednesday, then I'll add that as well.
