Don't rush so fast you trip yourself up.

Take your time to read the book once or twice so you get it right first time by the book and nothing else .

Then you'll never have cause to look back on a failure . you'll just be able to plan a head instead.

Welcome! I am currently in Temecula area (when I moved someone said 'it's hotter there' and I said "it is the first place I have had with central air. I am not worried') and will be moving to San Diego County as soon as I can. It may take a year or more but I am doing it. Anyway, the beauty of the area is there is something to plant at any moment. Do not forget to check out the regional forums or post there if you have area specific questions or observations.

Hello from San Diego, CA 654548 Mrsmusselman

Glad to have you join us.

I agree, when I first got the ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING book, I started reading and became very excited too. It is an easy read, and this forum is a good supplement to the book.

Have fun!Hello from San Diego, CA 998388915

Welcome.....Glad to see some one from my area.....I am in Chula Vista .....and we are so lucky to garden all year round.....

I gardened this way starting in 1991......but when my husband died ...I traveled and sure missed the enjoyment of gardening....the orignal book is still valuable.

I understand Mel lectured here last month...but didnt hear about it until the day afterward.....I understand he is working with the powers that be ....to help the homeless...learn to help themselves here in town....

I am a member of the Chula Vista Garden Club and am helping to pass the word about Square Foot Gardening. Most of the members are seniors and are very interested in the tabletop way of enjoying gardening. I grow my own seedlings and those that I cant use I sell to the members and the clubs treasury benefits....

You will find out there are SFGardeners around the world that are on this forum ..

Enjoy.....Ruth

What part of the San Diego county are you in?

It takes a lot of time to plan your squares and location etc.....if I were you I would start a temporary square outside your back door made out of cement blocks and Mel's Mix....$22.95 a bag ...its called Garden Time at Lowe's and get started with mostly greens for your salad...a 3x3 with a plastic bottom if on a patio slab....

Lowes plants....Bonnie Nursery are very expensive...go to Walmart and they have brocalli and cauliflower plants for $1+...look over carefully and you will find a happy extra 2 seeds that germinated..than plant one to a square then 4 lettuce holes in same square and some radish seeds along the other edge....Hope I explained the picture ok.....I wish they had brussel sprouts there also...

I have lettuce seeds to share to send you if I can get your address....seeds keep for years in containers in fridge....the new yearly shipment has been stocked and I think they are pkging less seeds in a pkg......Walmart also has another seed display for twenty cents at the nursery door to the outside...at my store...

Some people put soil and a flower in each cement block along the edges....dusty miller is a pretty silver plant for one.....petunas are colorful.....you almost have an instant garden to enjoy......happy gardening.......Ruth
