SFG in zone 6a - 2nd year Empty SFG in zone 6a - 2nd year

Post  MsMinchin 6/30/2010, 2:05 am

Finally posting some pics of my garden, still a work in progress.
I'm not having a lot of luck this year - grubs ate my spring crops, but the tomatoes and peppers are doing great (which I started from seed in my window).
I'd like to put down gravel for the walkways instead of grass, and make it prettier and more symmetrical, add a fence - maybe next year...

Two cherry and two roma tomatoes. The tall one I bought the others I started from seed. Next year I'm planning to grow around 20 tomato plants.

Also here's how I had to work last year - baby wouldn't let me put him down:

You've done a great job getting your SFG in shape, even with that cutest of backpacks.

Thanks for the support!
The teepee was intended to be a flowering hideout for my four-year-old, so I planted sweet peas - twice. Since they weren't doing much, I planted beans (white lady runner beans which my son picked out). However, it turns out the chipmunks seems to like those seeds so only a few beans are growing. I think the real problem is that I planted the teepee directly in the ground with no Mel's mix.

I was using a Moby Wrap to wear my baby on my back. He's so big though I stopped wearing him a long time ago, and now he's a toddler who likes to dig and eat dirt, so he doesn't get to help Mama in the garden anymore for now. Wink

My kids planted Sweet Peas in pots at 4-H. You might have more luck starting them inside next time. The seeds need to be scratched so that they sprout better. Once they are growing, season them outside before you plant them.

The squirrels in our yard leave the plants alone but pick out the seeds so I either cover things while they sprout or I start them inside.

I read about a Sunflower House and wanted to grow one this year. Didn't get around to it. Basically if you have the space, you grow a double circle of sunflowers at least 6 feet across. Leave an opening for a door. When the sunflowers start to grow, plant sweet peas. They grow up around the sunflower stalks and supposedly make a cool hide out.

I put up a fence as here in Marlton we have the Bunny Brigade and a host of chipmunks...so far so good. What are you planting now? The heat has really hindered a lot of the growing. I have spaces that are available and not sure what to plant.

Here are a few updates - I took these pictures on Sunday and 3 days later the cucumbers are now taller than the trellis.

Bell pepper on the way:

"Mystery pepper" - Jalapenos, I'm thinking?

Serranos!

Cherry tomatoes - we actually ate 6 already - as soon as they turned red:

San Marzano romas:

Corn, beans, tiny little leeks in front, and cucumbers climbing the other side of the trellis

Bigger leeks - these are transplants from the garden center:

Melons - this one is also a transplant from the garden center, though I started 2 other melon plants from seed that are catching up.

I bought some butternut squash seeds but I'm not sure where they will go yet. I also plan to plant peas for fall but it's been too hot to start them.
