I keep seeing your thermometers especially built for compost.
Can I use... a meat thermometer?  An old long thermometer for Chemistry Lab?
(That one is pretty long.)

A digital temp sensing thing, whatever it is, infrared readings or something?
Point and it reads temp from a distance.  Dig a bit and measure the hole steaming off?
(In my dreams at this point.)

What is the fastest way for us to start our compost at this point to use this Spring?
(I have a non-operative compost heap. Two.  One with kit scraps. One with leaves. Just been sitting there. Untended.)

Hi Soose...you really need a thermometer with a lone stem that really gets down in that compost pile. Compost piles should be 3 to 4 feet high and same with diameter so to get a good reading on temps it takes one with a long stem.

Amazon carries many different one that would work. Think mine has a 16 or 20 inch stem.

As to learning to compost I would suggest to read through the "Compost" forum topics on this forum. I learned a bunch reading through them. It just takes a certain mix of "green" type material like grass clippings, kitchen waste, etc. and plenty of "brown" material like leaves, etc. These are all mixed or layered certain ways to got one going.

Youtube has many good videos on how some start a compost.

Yes to the size of a compost pile/bin. And, yes to a 20" compost thermometer. They are ~$30.

Plus watering as the pile is built in 1 or 2 days.
