Peppers - Lots of 'em

I'm new to SFG and after reading the book I have to say I'm pretty impressed. I'm planning to have a 2x4 bed with different varieties of peppers. ( I know the book says to plant adjoining squares with different plants. This is more like a tryout. And I love peppers..) My first question is, is it OK to plant sweet and chilli peppers close together. The other question is, In the book it says you can plant 1 plant per square with peppers. That means I can have 8 pepper plants. That should cover all my pepper needs. But doesn't the pepper plants grow larger than 1 sqft. Has anyone planted peppers close together in a SFG and got good results. If not how much space should I leave between plants. Or should I go with a larger sized box or a different type of plants.

The varieties I'm hoping to plant are "Cayenne thin Chilli Pepper", "Sweet Banana Pepper", "Purple Beauty Bell Pepper" and "Emerald Giant Bell Pepper"..

First, welcome to the forum. Glad to have you here.

Peppers have brittle stems and need support. A strong wind can snap off branches and plants heavy with peppers will break.

I put mine in a line on the north end of a box. I put a t-post on each end of a box, and weave a string between the plants. This method is called a "Florida Weave".

I do this about every 6" of growth. Works great for tomatoes as well.

My guess is that in Sri Lanka your pepper plants will be able to achieve their maximum growth. You may be able to get information here at this link to Folia.

Now, just keep in mind that the info on folia is related to gardening mainly in North America, so my suggestion would be to ask some gardeners in your area how big the plants can get, then plan your SFG.

Take for example, Poblano pepper (YUM!) Folia says that they grow to just over 2 feet tall, but I know where they are native plants, they will grow to well over 10 feet tall.

I love the Florida weave for plant containment.

I have a total of 96 pepper plants in 4 seperate boxes and some are intermingled , no issues at all and I dont tie them up they grow together and support each other we picked 4 gallons two nights ago and have been all summer,,,, plant them wait and harvest they wont cross pollinate as some people think

Peppers can be grown side by side easily. They love to 'rub shoulders' and support each other that way to a high degree, barring severe storm winds.
