Celery

Anyone grown celery this year and might know why my celery did not look anything like the store-bought ones?

I bought transplants in the spring and today I realised that I had done nothing to them but water and give them a feed and they are just horrible. Not the nice fat white stalks that I was expecting. I do have a vague memory of something called blanching.

I suspect that my sins are sins of omission and I should have looked up somewhere on how to treat celery. All the stalk are thin and tough and bitter and have been consigned to the compost heap after washing out all the MM that was in the rootballs. Just a waste of two square this year. Sad

Having never grown celery and not looked a thing up about them, I would think there would be some hilling of soil required. You know, around the base of the plant to keep the lower parts of the stalks free from chlorophyll? But that is just a guess.

Thanks pattipan, I should have done a search instead of being lazy and asking.

I have of course done everything wrong, and as I was putting them in the compost heap I thought to myself that I was being to quick to give up. That is a lesson I have learned, so will give it another try next season.

Duly cut and pasted into my own personal book so that I will remember it for next time.

Heat and dry can be tough on celery but I hang tough thru that and get results again late season. Home produced celery has always produced smaller stalks that I cut sparingly as needed never the whole plant. The jumbo stalks you see in the store are from Az or Ca and were irrigated and fertilized heavily to grow large rapidly. Home celery is stronger than store bought so it is possible you are one of the few that just plain won’t like it. Mine is a little smaller this year but this is my first time for SFG and I have had a number of veggies that have under performed. Salad greens have done very well but it’s been all down hill from there which I’m hoping is strictly a poor compost quality issue.
