Tomato Pruning

I have 3 tomato plants in my garden that I started from seeds. Two beefsteaks and one betterboy. One beefsteak and one betterboy are doing extremely well. So in an effort to contain them and keep room for my other plants I have pruned them back some. I'm not sure if this is the right thing to do but my tomatoes love it.
Here's the kicker though. I decide not to just leave some of the cuttings to rot. I filled a container with water and put in two of the sprigs. Oh and did I mention they had flowers on them as well? Well that was about two weeks ago and not only do I have small tomatoes growing they are beginning to take root. I would imagine I will be able to transplant them in about another week or so.
Has anyone had experience with this and could offer some to do's?

I have had success pinching sucker and pruning the lower leaf brances from tomato plants, primarily to reduce the potential for fungus, but I have never pinched the tops to make them bush out. hmmmmmm.... another thing to ponder. Congrats on you new plants!

I had a potted cherry tomatoe plant that got blown over by wind last season and the stalk broke so i cut it just below the break and the parent plant did very well growing to over 6ft the cut part i seperated at a Y in the stem dipped them in rooting hormone and planted them in seperate pots for about 2 weeks i didnt think they were gonna make it all wilted and droopy then 1 day on my way to work i looked at them and they were perky and growing after another week in the pots i trnasplanted them to the garden where they took over the place lol growing well over the supports (8ft) down then over the garden fence and up the neighbors stockade fence with all of my neighbors help we could not eat the tomatoes as fast as they were growing on average the neighborhood wa sgetting about 6 to 8 dozen tomatoes a day. was my first time growing cherry tomatoes and i deffinatly learned my lesson lol

There is another neat thing you can do with tomatoes, if you get one that is long and tall, you can lay it down and cover the stem and just leave the top of the plant sticking out of the soil, it will root, sprout and grow a new tomato plant at every joint on the stem.
