Hello from Edmonton, Alberta
Hello everyone. My name is Margaret and I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I'm so new to square foot gardening that I haven't got a single seed planted yet. We had a terrible winter here in Edmonton, and the spring hasn't been much better. I have been an in-ground gardener on and off for several years, but advancing age, open heart surgery and an inflammatory arthritis diagnosis have led me to abandon the battle with weeds and heavy clay soils that I have waged in the past. I picked up a couple of raised bed frames on sale last fall and finally got them assembled earlier this week. It took me an entire day to find and purchase the ingredients for my planting medium, and two days to mix the compost, vermiculite and peat moss together. After buying seeds and doing some research on companion planting, I was finally ready to sow my two 4 foot by 4 foot beds today but the wind came up and gusted up to 45 km (28 mph). Nasty looking clouds rolled in and the temperature dropped to about 10 C (50 F). In short, it was a dark and stormy day, and I decided to spend the day inside. We have been promised warmer weather for the upcoming long weekend (the 24th of May weekend is a long weekend in Canada to celebrate (Queen) Victoria Day) so I plan to plant my seeds on Sunday. The May 24 long weekend was always when my mother planted her gardens so I guess I'm not too late. I'll let you know how it goes.
