Manure, compost and volunteer tomato question Empty Manure, compost and volunteer tomato question

Post  The Cat's Other Mother 6/3/2011, 9:53 pm

I walked down to my compost bin this morning to add kitchen scraps and rabbit poop, and saw that my volunteer tomato bush is still thriving and has produced a few nice-looking green tomatoes. I am wondering if these are going to be safe to eat, seeing as there is a layer of horse poop in that bin that probably isn't 100% composted yet, and certainly wouldn't have been when the tomato sprouted there.

Yes they will be safe to eat and quite possibly the best tomatoes you will grow. At least I have found that to be the case with volunteers from the compost pile Very Happy

Thanks! I am looking forward to trying them. Most of my bushes look like they are going to be Roma, but these look like the smaller 'on the vine' slicer type that I frequently buy at the grocery store. Very Happy

Like camprn, I've heard countless stories from folks about how their compost pile maters were their tastiest. Guess you could call em "free-range" maters.
