Squash and Grids Question

I'm new to SFG, and I'm really trying to follow the book (my OCD tendencies are having a heyday!! ). Mel says to plant a vine type summer squash "in the middle of a 2-square-foot-space under your vertical frame." I built the typical 4x4' beds... so do I have to remove my grids for that 2-square-foot section, and if so, how do I do that while leaving the rest of the square dividers intact??? Or is it alright to leave the grids as they are and just put the seed in somewhere near the middle? And if I do this, will the grids get in the way of the huge leaves and vines that are surely going to come??

Any help would be so appreciated. I have just a few weeks before I can plant the summer squash anyway, but tomorrow I am going to put in some of my colder stuff (yes, I'm late ) and I want to make sure that I'm leaving the right kind of room for my squash that will come later.

I would definitely give the squash two squares at the edge of the bed and just go ahead and plant the seed in the outermost square. It's air rights that the squash needs most, not root space. And just leave the grid in place.

What kind of vining squash are you growing? I've got Tatume and Tromboncino (aka Rampicante) growing strong.

You sure came to the right place and we are so glad you are here. I hope reading ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING helped you feel confident in planting your new SFG. The spacing, the watering, the specific ingredients are all spelled out along with seeding tips and general information regarding germination times.

I second elliephant regarding planting in the corner square under the trellis and leaving the next square under the trellis empty. If you are more comfortable planting close to the middle of that two block section, it will work well. No need to remove the grid in that area.
I also am interested in knowing the variety of your vining squash. I did find a vining zucchini, I believe the variety is Black Hawk, and I will be trying it this year for the first time.
