7 million new gardeners

This is just an FYI. I know we have many first time gardeners in this forum and I found this interesting.

A recent survey by the Garden Writers Association Foundation (GWAF), found that 7.7 million American households grew a vegetable garden for the first time in 2009. The total number of households in the United States with vegetable gardens was 41 million. When asked if they planned to continue their garden for 2010, 37% of households reported plans to increase their edible gardens, 29% reported they planned to plant about the same as 2009 and only 1% reported they would plant less than this year. The GWAF survey found the main reason given for increasing or maintaining edible gardening in 2010 was to supplement household food supply.

Very interesting information Tim. I know i started ours to sorta help bring me and grandpa a little closer together and to provide better vegtables for us not to mention cutting back on the food bill a little. Like the commercial says " We gotta take our nickles back where we can get them"

There are several:
1) I just love playing in the dirt! It is a great stress reliever.
2) Food supply is very important. I intend to continue to expand it and want to grow the most amount of food I possibly can, for present consumption and storage.
3) I want to teach my children (who are both teenagers and totally uninterested) how to grow their own food. I believe there will come a day (in the near future - considering our current government status) where they will need to know this!

Well, I can tell you as one of those 7.7 million, it was to supplement the household food supply! And, as one of the 37%, I'm hoping the SFG method will help to improve my chances! sunny
