Welcome to the Forums, Tania! You've presented an interesting question. I have not heard anyone talk about grapes in the SFG. I don't know too much about growing grapes, only that my neighbor had them along his chainlink fence. I don't know how many plants he had. I do know, however, that they were all over the place.

I wonder how deep their roots go? I sure hope someone else will jump in here and give you some better input! In the meantime, welcome again, to SFG. Are you planning a SFG? What else are you thinking about putting in there? Keep checking back for some advice and take a look around all the other Forums here. I hope we hear more from you.

Growing Grapes Empty Growing grapes

I started 5 gardens last year and overflowed with produce. I also used Mel's mix in my pots and grew these Nicotinia I thought were going to take over the world. It was pretty amazing. I need to plant some grapes and thought about one of my smaller boxes that is a bit harder to access.

Where are you in Ohio. I grew up in Toledo.

I have 4 different varieties of grapes but not in a sfg. Depending on the type you can either get self pollinating or female plants will need a pollinator.

As fas as the root system, thats a big debate, some say you can get away with 12" others say grape roots go down to 6+ ft. Then again, people say you cant grow tomatoes in only 6" of soil and the SFG proves them wrong.

I'd say go for it, just give em lots of room to spread out and a real sturdy trellis, make sure you keep them pruned so they'll put their energy into producing grapes and not sending out runners.

this should help http://extension.missouri.edu/publications/DisplayPub.aspx?P=G6090
