Earthquake in Canada Empty Earthquake in Canada

Post  Blackrose 6/23/2010, 3:44 pm

We had a 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit around the Ontario/Quebec border this afternoon. I felt it in my home just north of Toronto. I'm guessing that the epicentre is approximately 400-500 km from me.

It was the strangest feeling. I was sitting in my recliner and all of a sudden the chair started shaking. I thought one of my cats got stuck inside the recliner, so I jumped up to check. That's when I realized that the table that I keep my laptop on was shaking and so was the floor! A very strange feeling.

Anyone else from the Ontario/Quebec region or even in the northeast states have any stories about the earthquake today?

My TT SFG is still standing! Earthquake in Canada Icon_cheers

5.5? That seems BIG. Glad you are ok. Isn't it funny what goes through your head when your mind is trying to make sense of what is happening?

That would be a drag to have your TT fall.

Here in CA we are used to them, of course. They do get your attention. We all have our stories. LOL. The last one I felt was in LA at the Farmer's Market and it was the Mexicali one. Because it was so far away there was none of the telltale noise, just the waves of the quake moving through. I just thought I was dizzy and kept looking at the others at our table to see if one of them was rocking it. Earthquake in Canada Icon_smile

Many people felt it here in Cincinnati, too. I work in a manufacturing plant, so if I felt it, I probably assumed it was a truck or some other heavy piece of equipment. Glad you are home and hope you enjoyed your vacation. Even more glad that you (& your garden) are fine!

Yes, I'm in the Buffalo/Niagara Falls, NY area, and I noticed it. I didn't really FEEL it, but there was a weird noise in the dining room, so I went to check it out. I have a glass ice bucket on top of a wine rack, and the ice bucket has a martini shaker in it. I saw that the noise was the ice bucket moving the martini shaker around inside it. I looked at the curtains to see if we just had a gust of wind, but no, we didn't. Then, I started moving the feet around on the wine rack because I already know it's not on a flat area of the floor. By that time, the bucket had stopped shaking. I asked myself, "Could that have been a little earthquake?" I shrugged it off until the news broke in with a "special report" saying that we weren't crazy, it was an actual earthquake! Earthquake in Canada Icon_eek

I didn't really hear anything, I just felt the waves of the quake. It truly was an unusual feeling.

The last earthquake I remember here was when I was little. I think I was 7 or 8. I was sleeping and the shaking woke me up. I thought it was my little brother shaking my bed to play a joke on me.

We felt it here in the Pembroke/Petawawa Area of the Ottawa Valley.

I missed it, I was in my car driving back to work from lunch and didn't feel a thing. My co-workers were all standing outside the office when I pulled into the parking lot. I asked who burnt popcorn this time, thinking it was a fire alarm or drill.

They said it was an earthquake and that the building had shaken quite a bit. We had to wait until the building was inspected before we could go back in. It was more than just a tremor and lasted over a minute. They said the building shook, creaked, and moaned....they didn't think twice about exiting the building as quickly as they could.

On the news, there was reports of damage in Ottawa and some towns in Quebec. Some broken windows, shifted car ports, and a bridge collapse along a highway.

Wow!! Glad everyone is ok and the damage minor. Strange. I had no idea there were fault lines to create such large quakes in that area. I guess the earth moves everywhere. I remember hearing about a small one in the midwest here.
